Street Maintenance Worker
Performs a variety of skilled work in the construction and maintenance of City streets, roads, shoulders, trails, sidewalks, and railroad facilities; makes and installs traffic signs and pavement markings and striping. Subject to work after hours and weekends as required. Safely performs all job functions. Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or GED and four years of increasingly responsible experience in streets construction and/or maintenance area(s), or closely related experience. Licenses, certifications, and other requirements include a valid Class "A" CDL with tanker endorsement, American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) Traffic Control Supervisor Certification, Railway Worker Protection Certificate, American Public Works Association Winter Maintenance Operator Certificate, and a valid Flagger's Card. Essential job functions include training, directing, overseeing, and providing guidance to assigned staff, completing street and railroad construction and maintenance work, contributing to the planning and documentation of assigned work, planning, laying out, forming, pouring, and finishing concrete, performing railroad track and switch maintenance duties, preparing traffic control plans, performing traffic control functions, and performing other duties as assigned. Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws, modern office practices, record-keeping principles, MUTCD regulations, street maintenance, traffic signage, pavement markings, proper tools and equipment, and health and safety policies is required. Skills and abilities include learning, reading, interpreting, applying, and explaining rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; following oral and written instructions; observing legal and defensive driving practices; following safety and health regulations; operating various equipment; working independently and/or leading a small work group; communicating effectively; organizing and prioritizing projects; using tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment; establishing and maintaining positive working relationships; operating modern office equipment and personal computers; and providing continuous effort to improve operations and work cooperatively to provide quality customer service. Competencies include using technical/functional expertise, being accountable for performance, providing excellent customer service, communicating effectively, and working safely. Working conditions include performing the job in the field, working outdoors on a year-round basis, being exposed to extreme weather conditions, working in dirty areas with construction debris, encountering dust, noise, and fumes, working above or below the ground, and being exposed to moving heavy equipment, mechanical parts, and vehicles. Physical demands include operating a motorized vehicle or heavy equipment, operating standard equipment, standing, walking, bending, sitting, reaching, kneeling, and stretching, crawling in tight spaces, climbing ladders, walking through construction or maintenance sites, lifting, pushing, carrying, and pulling materials, and having good vision and the ability to hear and speak.
