Overview
This is a full-time, salaried position reporting to the Director of Admissions. The Admissions Counselor is responsible for high-skill recruitment activities for the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC) and all of LSTC’s degree and non-degree programs. This role recruits targeted populations with attention to increase diversity and equity for incoming recruitment classes, supports admissions processes, and guides prospective students through the onboarding and first-year experience. The Admissions Counselor travels to recruit nationally and locally, counsels prospective students on ministry vocations, and provides information about LSTC’s programs. The role works with colleges, churches, synods, and other ELCA seminaries and accompanies new students through their first year to help them acclimate to seminary life.
Responsibilities
Recruitment: Represent LSTC programs in college campuses, ELCA congregations and synods, camps, and denominational events nationwide; cultivate relationships in Chicagoland and the Midwest; attend college fairs and external recruitment events; maintain contact with prospective students via phone, email, or text; assist with planning and hosting on-campus recruitment events; collaborate with faculty and staff on student discernment.
Admissions: Guide prospective learners through the admissions decision and discernment process; achieve recruitment goals as determined by the Director of Admissions; utilize enrollment management and CRM software to manage communications.
Onboarding & First-Year Experience Guidance: Assist with onboarding of confirmed students; retain students through the add/drop period; provide guidance and connect students with LSTC resources during the first year.
Additional Responsibilities: Participate in and support the admissions committee; develop partnerships with underrepresented circles; strengthen LSTC’s image among influencers; participate in professional development; maintain positive working relationships with admissions and candidacy representatives; other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow FERPA rules and regulations.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Organized, adaptable, and fast learner with strong customer service and time management skills.
High degree of intercultural competency and commitment to antiracism.
Ability to build rapport with students and stakeholders with grace and care.
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Valid United States driver’s license and willingness to travel 3-5 days per week during peak travel season.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably in theology or a related field.
Knowledge of ELCA and LSTC, including candidacy process for rostered ministry; willingness to learn about rostered ministry and related services.
Bilingual Spanish/English abilities are a plus.
Ability to learn and use new systems and software quickly.
Experience leveraging social media for marketing purposes.
Self-driven, creative, goal-oriented, diligent, outgoing, and motivated; strong team player with a positive attitude.
Ability to work collaboratively and independently with minimal guidance.
