Summary: Reporting to the Assistant Provost for Graduate and Postdoctoral Professional Development, the Director for PhD Student Resources oversees initiatives tailored to PhD students across the Charles River and Medical Campuses, including the PhD Progression program and the Vitamin PhD podcast. The Director supervises student interns or student employees and coordinates with university partners to develop new resources addressing PhD student skills development and career preparation. The Director works with students one-on-one or in small groups as needed, and may oversee programs, events, and services that also include postdoctoral scholars when appropriate. The Director collaborates with BU faculty and staff and with the Assistant Provost for Graduate and Postdoctoral Professional Development and the Associate Provost for Graduate Affairs to develop and facilitate new workshops and short courses.
Essential Functions (approx. 40% focus on professional development initiatives and resources):
Facilitation/Teaching: Leads programs and workshops for the PhD audience and supports joint professional development events with Director colleagues as appropriate.
Supervision: Directly supervises student employees fulfilling data analysis and communications needs, and student podcast interns.
Data Analysis: Designs assessment tools and analyzes data to improve professional development programs; collects and analyzes data to inform PhD student-related policy.
Communications: Collaborates on communications related to PhD professional development, website content and social media, and targeted emails to students and faculty mentors.
Special Projects: Leads or supports special projects identified by the Assistant Provost for Graduate and Postdoctoral Professional Development or the Associate Provost for Graduate Affairs, including developing new resources or initiatives and high-level data collection or reporting for university leaders.
Required Skills
Education: PhD degree
Experience: 3–5 years of experience working with PhD students and/or postdoctoral scholars in a higher education setting (postdoctoral experience may count toward years of professional experience).
Communication: Advanced written and oral communication skills
