Overview
The Department of Sociology at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMB) invites qualified persons to apply for a tenure-track assistant professor position to join our faculty beginning September 1, 2026. Candidates should have demonstrated research and teaching strengths in the sociology of gender/sexualities with a preference for candidates who can teach Queer Theory/Methods. Candidates who are able to teach a first-year course for sociology majors requiring qualitative methods are preferred. Candidates should have an emerging/established research program with the potential to generate external funding, a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring, the capacity to expand diversity initiatives on campus, and enhance the university’s commitment to public service. Responsibilities
Develop and maintain an active and externally fundable research program in the sociology of gender/sexualities. Teach courses across undergraduate and graduate programs, including potential first-year sociology courses requiring qualitative methods. Contribute to teaching excellence and mentoring of students; participate in departmental, college, and university service. Engage in initiatives that expand diversity and public service on campus. Maintain a normal teaching load of 2-2 over the academic year. Qualifications
PhD in Sociology or a closely related discipline by August 31, 2026 (or equivalent documentation). Strong research and teaching record in gender/sexualities sociology; ability to teach Queer Theory/Methods is preferred. Emerging or established research agenda with potential for external funding; commitment to mentoring and teaching. About the Department and Opportunities
Our department serves a large undergraduate program with majors in Sociology and Criminology & Criminal Justice. We offer graduate programs including a Master’s and PhD in Sociology.
