This Opportunity

WSP USA is seeking a

Senior Consultant, Ports and Marine Engineering

to join our National Maritime Practice Group. This position can be based out of the following offices: Irvine, San Diego, San Francisco-CA, Miami-FL, Portland-OR, Seattle-WA, or Houston-TX.

Provides engineering support to other technical staff, engineers, and project managers for the development, design, construction, and/or inspection of structures and facilities for port, marine, and intermodal rail terminal projects in the public and private sector. Facilities may include piers, wharves, port and upland marine terminals, seawalls/bulkheads, dry docks, marinas and other nearshore/offshore facilities. Delivers work products at a quality level that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact

Provide leadership for engineering tasks including collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, survey data, technical reports and drawings, and/or other data matrices for project development, design, and construction.

Lead development of construction plans and schedules, specifications, and cost estimates for ports and marine projects. Prepare and implement site safety activity plans and coordinate field work activities.

Lead cross-functional teams to execute project work on mid-level projects or multiple concurrent smaller projects. Collaborate with other engineers and multi-disciplinary teams on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvements. Track budgets and milestone progress; support completion of PS&E submissions.

Write technical reports and document findings using sketches, calculations, spreadsheets, technical drawings, and engineering software (including SAP2000 and similar FEM tools).

Apply higher-order engineering techniques to develop project design requirements, incorporating marine-practice engineering standards. Identify project site, design and construction risks and provide mitigation solutions.

Create simplified and advanced computer structural analytical finite element models for design of fixed and floating marine structures, subject to gravity, live loads, environmental loads, and seismic loads.

Prepare design documentation for structural components including steel and concrete (cast-in-place and precast/prestressed) deep foundation systems, and substructure/superstructure elements.

Prepare project task budgets and schedules for review.

Prepare and present findings and recommendations to internal/external team members and clients.

Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.

Conduct overwater and/or over-deck inspections of port terminals and visually assess condition of elements.

Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies; exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources.

Complete assigned trainings and perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program

5 to 7 years of relevant experience in marine project-specific design (including rehabilitation and new design)

EIT or similar certification/licensure

Experience in analysis and design of marine projects, proficient in SAP2000 and/or other FEM tools; design and detailing of reinforced and prestressed concrete and steel components per ACI, AISC, PCI, and/or AASHTO

Experience with AutoCAD, REVIT, and related BIM tools

Construction experience in ports and marine-related projects

Understanding of multidisciplinary team coordination and design/construction document preparation; familiarity with domestic/international agency design standards

Strong interpersonal and communication skills; proficient technical report writing

Ability to lead with attention to detail, multi-task, and prioritize in a dynamic environment; capable of working independently or as part of a team

Proven commitment to workplace safety and adherence to health, safety, and harassment policies

Occasional travel may be required; ability to work schedules that extend beyond the typical workweek

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from ABET-accredited program with 7+ years of post-education design experience in ports and marine structures

Registered Professional Engineer licensure

Familiarity with domestic/international marine terminal codes (e.g., MOTEMS, ASCE COPRI, PIANC) and DoD criteria

Experience with LSDYNA or related software

Active involvement in local professional practice organizations

Experience with marine, port, and coastal construction laws, codes, and compliance practices

Field investigation or construction support experience for port and marine structures

Open to candidates with a commercial dive license (ADCI or DCBC) in addition to qualifications
