Overview
This posting is for the State of Hawaii, Department of Health, located on the island of Oahu. Salary is available at multiple levels: Level II through Level VI with respective monthly salaries. The Department uses the Hiring Innovation for Rapid Employment (HIRE) Pilot Project, which defers traditional screening of minimum qualifications until after a selection is made. A referral or interview does not guarantee that the applicant meets the minimum qualifications. If selected, a comprehensive review of the application packet will determine if minimum qualifications are met, and a conditional offer may be issued if qualified. Responsibilities
General Duty and/or Clinical Nursing work involves direct and/or indirect nursing care to patients in hospitals, infirmaries, sanitaria or similar health care facilities. Assignments may include rotations among clinical services such as obstetrics, pediatrics, surgery, orthopedics, outpatient, geriatrics, tuberculosis, psychiatric, Hansen’s disease, etc.
Public Health Nursing emphasizes case finding, follow-through, health guidance and teaching, and liaison with community health and related services. Responsibilities include direct and/or indirect nursing care aimed at maintaining health and preventing illness, as well as treatment and cure. Assignments may be in a specific geographic area or specialized community public health clinics.
Alternate Situation positions may involve program specialization in a clinical service or nursing subject matter. Duties include planning, organizing and coordinating community and/or institution educational and consultative services related to specialized nursing techniques, methods and treatment services; assisting nurses and program administrators in developing and improving nursing programs, policies and procedures; planning and conducting education programs; and supervising subordinate nursing and/or clerical personnel.
Qualifications
General Experience Requirement:
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Education and experience requirements are generally not required to be gained concurrently unless specifically indicated. Qualifying work experience is credited based on a 40-hour work week.
License Requirement:
License to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Hawaii.
Specialized Experience Requirement:
Level II = 0 years; Level III = 6 months; Level IV = 1 year 6 months; Level V = 2 years 6 months; Level VI = 3 years 6 months. Professionals must have professional experience as a registered nurse. Public health nursing experience is required for public health nursing positions as shown in the table above.
For all positions, applicants for Registered Nurse IV and V must have one year of satisfactory work experience comparable to the next lower level in the State service. Examples include supervisory responsibilities for patient care and management activities or independent public health nursing treatment, care and educational services within an assigned geographic area, depending on setting.
For Registered Nurse VI, all applicants must have one year of experience comparable to Registered Nurse V or two years of experience comparable to Registered Nurse IV in the State service.
Administrative Aptitude:
For Registered Nurse VI in both public health nursing and hospital, institutional or clinic nursing, administrative aptitude is required. Evidence may include managerial assignments, successful projects involving administration, budgeting, and staff guidance; and/or relevant coursework or training in administration.
Substitution:
Possession of a master's degree and/or Doctor of Nursing Practice degree may substitute for one year of experience.
Selective Certification:
Some positions may require selective certification related to specialized duties.
