Wireless Network Engineer
— IT Data Network, UCSF Full Time Location: San Francisco, CA | Campus: Mission Center Building (SF) | Work Style: Flexible | Shift: Days | Shift Length: 8 Hours The Wireless Network Engineer will be essential in facilitating effective wireless communication and enabling the digital connectivity of the UCSF community across the Health, Education, Research, and Business missions. You will continuously adapt to emerging technologies and industry standards to provide cutting-edge wireless solutions. Builds and maintains the UCSF wireless network. Provides network engineering and technical support for wireless network infrastructure, ensuring systems operate at peak efficiency with little to no downtime. Designs, configures, troubleshoots, and maintains UCSF network equipment across multiple platforms. Ensures all networking activities are aligned to industry best practices as well as IT and UCSF policies, processes, and procedures. The Wireless Network Engineer will report to the Associate Director, Wired and Wireless, who serves as a technical engineer for the network services team at UCSF. The role is responsible for daily operational support, maintenance, improvement, documentation, and implementation of all network's wireless services under the wired and wireless portfolio. This position ensures IT meets both current and future network service needs of a broad range of customers, partners, and key stakeholders in administrative and academic units. It guides a team of engineers to drive innovative solutions, and supports the delivery of best-in-class service to UCSF. Direct strategic and operational planning to achieve business goals, prioritizing initiatives and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future IT systems across the organization. It ensures flexible, efficient, and reliable systems aligned with campus growth and the health mission. This role will positively impact UCSF's operations and culture by ensuring IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in support of the academic mission. The IT Network Services department includes Network Security, Network Field Services, Network Wired and Wireless Services, and Network Infrastructure Services. It supports clinical, research, and academic environments with a high level of customer satisfaction. The final salary and offer components are subject to UC policy. The annual salary range is $113,800-$242,800. The entry point for this role starts at $139,680+ depending on experience. Department Description
The Network Services team manages, maintains, and develops the company’s computer network infrastructure, ensuring reliable technical accessibility for medical and health research work. Core responsibilities include secure internet and network services, IT service management, data systems maintenance, user support, system updates, repairs, and connectivity issue resolution. The team oversees software/hardware updates, data storage, disaster recovery, and network resilience, providing specialized technical support to staff involved in medical and health research.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in computer science, engineering, computer information systems, or related field. Five or more years of experience in network services, field services, information technology, or network operations. Extensive experience in information technology, network engineering, or wireless networks. Extensive experience troubleshooting wireless networks, including client testing, wireless packet analysis, vendor coordination, active and passive wireless site surveys, and advanced troubleshooting (packet analyzers) for wired and wireless networks, including security measures, multicast, dynamic routing, and load balancing. Experience with 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, RF design, WLAN fundamentals; knowledge of LAN/WAN and network protocols; experience with monitoring tools and commands for quick issue resolution. Experience designing controller clustering, failover methods, AP management, patching, RF management, and wireless optimizations (AP placement, roaming, spectrum, channel tuning, cell optimization, QoS). Experience documenting wireless networks, overlaying APs onto CAD-like blueprints for heat mapping; familiarity with 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, RF design and WLAN fundamentals. Strong understanding of modern enterprise TCP/IP networks including OSPF, BGP, STP/RSTP, 802.1Q, Multicast, VRF-lite, QoS, IPSEC. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate with customers and stakeholders effectively; build positive working relationships. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to identify and resolve complex network issues. Strong written and verbal communication; ability to convey technical information to a diverse audience. Strong organizational skills; ability to balance competing priorities and manage multiple projects in a structured environment; familiarity with project management practices. Ability to work onsite in San Francisco when needed.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of local, state, and federal IT regulations, privacy laws, safety standards, and service level agreement adherence; experience handling confidential information and reporting to management. Experience with Aruba Wireless and ClearPass NAC; solid knowledge of server and virtual technologies. Creative thinker, able to propose innovative ideas and adapt quickly in a fast-paced environment. Certifications: CompTIA Network+ or CCNA; Aruba ACCP; Aruba ACMP; ITIL V4
