Vice President, Commercial Development
Overview:
The Vice President, Commercial Development (VPCD) leads the Advanced Drug Delivery Systems (ADDS) Commercial Development team responsible for new and ongoing business development and for helping lead pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients through the combination product development process. The position oversees signing feasibility, development, and service agreements that help customers accelerate their combination product journey with BD ADDS products and services. It is based in Franklin Lakes, NJ, and is expected to be in the office 4 days a week in accordance with BD Franklin Lakes site expectations, unless traveling for business purposes. The VPCD is accountable for creating value by leading combination product business and commercial development activities with partners at all leadership levels, drawing on BD resources across Marketing, Strategy / Business Development, Legal, R&D, Quality, and Operations. This key role oversees the team that initiates long-term customer relationships with pharmaceutical companies wishing to develop ADDS combination products utilizing BD devices. Our ADDS solutions include BD PhysioJect autoinjector, BD Vystra multidose pen, Libertas Wearable Injector, and Evolve On-Body Injector, enabling pharmaceutical companies to administer their medicines to patients. The VP, Commercial Development leads the team responsible for the commercial and business development elements of ADDS platform activities, in collaboration with customers, the BD Project Management Organization, and BD cross-functional teams. These engagements are multi-year and involve multiple projects across all stages of drug and combination product development, requiring long-term relationships, structuring and closing feasibility, development, and service agreements, and guiding key client liaisons through the development cycle to eventual commercial launch. Responsibilities: Lead the teams responsible for business development and commercial development activities that arise during combination product development programs in collaboration with cross-functional BD teams and external customer teams to ensure success of the program, as defined by the customer Lead the Commercial Development teams and work with cross-functional internal and external teams to assess customer needs, timelines, resources, and materials required to communicate development activities; ensure all BD services are offered to the pharmaceutical partner during the program Work across the BD matrix to gain cross-functional support, engage SMEs, and know-how to support the program over time Balance customer needs with BD's strategy and goals by ensuring appropriate resources while engaging BD stakeholders Have a deep understanding of drug delivery device systems such as pens, autoinjectors, and wearables Guide and teach customers during the development program Build strong industry knowledge of ADDS products and competitor products and capabilities Understand design history files and essential performance requirements for various drug/device combination products Attend industry and medical conferences to engage with customers Collaborate with marketing, R&D, medical, regulatory to communicate technical benefits of ADDS products in buyer-facing language Establish and leverage key contacts with global pharmaceutical/biotech decision makers and consultants Manage long-term relationships with customers with diplomacy and trust Education, Skills, and Experience Required : Bachelor's degree in life sciences, scientific discipline, or engineering; MBA preferred Experience in the drug/device combination product regulatory framework (FDA, MDR, etc.) Minimum of 7 years of drug/device combination product development experience; experience in sales/business development, R&D, program management, or analytical services highly valued Knowledge of the global injectable pharmaceutical market, drug delivery, and medical device industry Expertise in development and commercialization of drug/device combination products Experience with FDA 820.30 design controls, regulations, guidance documents, and standards governing combination product development (ISO, FDA, MDR, ASTM, etc.) Working knowledge of ISO 11040 Part 8, 11608 Part 1 & 5 Experience in reviewing and revising legal documents Experience in setting prices with understanding of P&L, gross margins, COGS, tiered pricing, etc. Experience working with external suppliers to develop quotations, set specifications, and enable excellent supplier service Excellent presentation and writing skills; ability to present complex matters succinctly International business and travel experience; willingness to travel extensively Additional Skills and Competencies Required : Technical understanding of pharmaceutical and device development to connect with BD subject matter experts early in customer engagement Project management, problem solving, and leadership across a cross-functional organization Critical thinking in tactical and strategic dimensions; strong negotiation skills Ability to prioritize tasks in real time and exercise judgment in high-stakes environments Establish credibility, trust, and support with internal and external constituents at all levels and functions Capability to work across functions to meet deliverables on timelines; project management experience required Ability to work in a highly matrixed environment; strong networking and collaboration skills Work Environment : Candidate must be able to work in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment, and willing to travel globally up to 50% of the time (contingent on BD Travel Policies).
