Overview
We need a highly skilled and experienced Controller to lead and manage the firm’s accounting operations. The Controller will oversee the day-to-day financial functions, including the general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and client accounting. The role will manage the chart of accounts, accounting systems, and internal controls to ensure accuracy and compliance with financial regulations.
Responsibilities
Oversee daily accounting functions: general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and client accounting.
Manage the organization’s chart of accounts, general ledger, subledgers, ERP modules, and accounting policies and procedures.
Coordinate monthly, quarterly, and yearly close processes; ensure timely preparation of accurate financial statements.
Coordinate internal and external audit activities.
Support financial decisions with CAO, leadership, and executive teams; guide organization-wide financial strategy.
Assess current accounting operations, processes, responsibilities, systems, and reports; implement improvements.
Design, implement, and maintain effective internal controls; develop and monitor financial and accounting performance metrics.
Hire, train, and retain accounting staff; manage performance and develop the team.
Assist with annual budgets, quarterly forecasts, monthly estimates, and variance reports.
Research accounting issues for GAAP compliance and provide cost and ad hoc analyses as needed.
Cross-functional collaboration with departments such as legal, operations, and HR.
Required Qualifications
Ten years of progressively responsible experience in accounting roles.
Extensive experience using ERP systems; multi-state/multi-business unit experience.
Experience in a personal injury law firm is a plus.
Proficiency with consolidation and financial reporting/forecasting, HCM, expense reporting, and similar systems.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and working knowledge of other MS Office tools.
Strong analytical and detail-oriented skills; ability to interpret financial data, identify trends, and offer insights.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to present complex financial concepts to executives and non-finance stakeholders.
Strong leadership and team management capabilities with the ability to mentor and develop accounting staff.
Strategic mindset; able to align accounting functions with overall business goals.
Ownership mentality with accountability for deliverables and results.
Integrity and high ethical standards; ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to multitask, prioritize, delegate effectively, and operate without requiring follow-up from leadership.
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field required.
