Description

The Physician Assistant (PA) will provide patient care coverage 7 days a week, including various holidays, in the Emergency Dept. The PA will manage the care of Emergency Department observation patients and Senior Emergency Care Unit patients and follow standardized advanced practice procedure guidelines to provide follow-through with the care plan. Assess and provide medical care appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. Practice must be in accordance with Professional Standards of Practice. Collaborate with off-site physicians within interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary contexts. Under general supervision, perform operational level duties as described in UCSD Performance Policy. The major emphasis is direct patient care delivery. Assignments primarily involve management of patients with chronic and/or episodic health problems. May include community teaching programs, participation in program planning, and development of patient education information. The position may involve other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

California Physician Assistant (PA) license.

Current PA Certification from NCCPA.

BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to obtain ART within six months of hire date.

PALS certification.

Minimum two (2) years of recent experience as a Physician Assistant (PA) in an Emergency Department.

Proficiency in documentation of patient conditions and outcomes.

Knowledge of common diagnostic tests, exams and procedures (e.g., laboratory tests, X-rays, EKGs, biopsies, GI endoscopies).

Ability to independently perform clinical procedures with autonomy.

Strong computer skills with knowledge of PCIS/Epic (preferred).

Knowledge of clinical laboratory values and ability to identify deviations.

Experience providing patient education and counseling, and developing and implementing treatment plans.

Skill in patient interviewing and obtaining concise medical history and pertinent data.

Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Five (5+) years of PA experience in an Emergency Department.

High-acuity triage and critical care experience.

Proficiency in independently performing ED procedures (e.g., laceration repair, I&D, splinting, wound management, airway support).

Special Conditions

Night shifts required; may cover mid shifts or day shifts, on-call and locations based on center needs.

Employment subject to criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Must obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment; advanced practice experience must be within the last two years.

Pay and Work Details

Work Schedule: Nights, 12-hour shifts, Sunday - Saturday

Appointment Type: Per Diem

Appointment Percent: 20%
