Overview
Associate Principal Scientist - Fermentation, Novel Expression Systems. The Novel Expression Systems (NES) team is seeking a scientist with experience in fermentation engineering and process development. Our team is part of the Continuous & Expression Technologies group within the Process Research & Development Enabling Technologies organization. We are tasked with introducing and advancing expression systems across a range of organisms for discovery and development of novel biologics, vaccines, and engineered enzymes. Our all-modality team works closely with scientists across the company to advance science and technologies with the goal of improving human health. This role will be a subject matter expert in microbial fermentation process development, expected to lead and drive innovation in this area to enhance capabilities within the organization. The candidate will help execute the group’s strategy, lead or co-lead cross-functional teams for technology development initiatives, identify high-impact cross-functional projects, set priorities and goals, and work across functional boundaries to execute plans experimentally to enhance the company’s pipeline. They will develop and optimize fermentation processes for different microbial hosts across scales, work with and manage CROs/CMOs, and identify, develop, and implement novel technologies to broaden fermentation capabilities. The candidate will engage externally through presentations, publications, and participation in external consortia, and will mentor, coach, and train scientists at the bench. Responsibilities
Lead and drive innovation in fermentation process development and optimization, including scale-up and scale-down for microbial systems (e.g., Bacillus subtilis) to meet project requirements. Develop and optimize fermentation processes across bench, pilot, and larger scales for different microbial hosts. Oversee downstream process development activities (e.g., flocculation, microfiltration, ultrafiltration) when applicable and collaborate with cross-functional teams. Manage external partners, CROs/CMOs, to meet project timelines and deliverables. Identify, develop, and implement novel technologies to broaden fermentation capabilities. Engage with external communities through presentations, publications, chairing sessions, and participation in consortia. Mentor, coach, and train scientists, promoting scientific rigor and innovative thinking within the group. Qualifications
Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Synthetic Biology, or a related field with 3+ years of relevant industry experience. Candidates with a B.S. or M.S. plus 7+ years of relevant industry experience will also be considered. Extensive experience in fermentation process development and optimization, including scale-up/scale-down in microbial systems. In-depth knowledge of microbial fermentations at bench and pilot scales. Knowledge and experience with downstream process development (flocculation, microfiltration, ultrafiltration) strongly preferred. Experience working with and managing CROs/CMOs is highly preferred. Familiarity with biocatalysis, protein engineering, biotherapeutics, or vaccines is a plus. Demonstrated ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and to coach and mentor researchers. Excellent communication and organizational skills; strong track record of peer-reviewed publications and research presentations. Education Minimum Requirements
Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Synthetic Biology or related field with 3+ years of relevant industry experience. Candidates with B.S. and/or M.S. degree plus 7+ years relevant industry experience will also be considered. Additional Information
