Overview
Surgical Technologist - Surgical Services (Main Operating Room) role at UI Health. Under supervision of a Registered Nurse and Physician, performs technical functions related to surgical asepsis, instrument preparation and presentation during surgical cases. Supports patient care and unit goals within the OR team.
Duties & Responsibilities
Follows established Operating Room policies and procedures
Assists in care, maintenance, distribution and control of equipment and supplies (sterile and unsterile) used in operating procedures
Assists as Scrub Attendant, arranging sterile articles, handling instruments, dressing materials and sutures while maintaining sterility
Completes sponge, needle and instrument counts with RN prior to, during and after surgery; reports discrepancies
Under RN direction, prepares medications on the sterile field (non-narcotics) and double-checks doses with RN or MD
Assists with infusions under direction of RN or MD; helps prepare OR for surgical procedures
Checks equipment for proper functioning before, during and after cases
Participates in daily stocking of OR supplies (e.g., sutures, OMNI supplies)
Initiates cleaning of OR equipment and ensures use of appropriate covers
Assists with instrument cleanup during routine hours or after-hours cases; cleans and packs instruments after hours
Performs other duties as assigned and participates in special projects
Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s degree in Surgical Technology from an approved Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation program
OR current NBSTSA certification or current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification

Prior Operating Room experience
