Overview
The staff physician (psychiatry) is assigned to the VA San Francisco Health Care System (VASFHCS), Mental Health Service, providing comprehensive, efficient, compassionate, high quality healthcare to all patients, functioning as a member of the inter-disciplinary team providing clinical care to the patients at VASFHCS Downtown San Francisco Community Based Outpatient Clinic. As a Staff Psychiatrist, the responsibilities include providing care to veterans with psychiatric conditions including Substance Addiction Disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Mood Disorders such as Major Depression and Bipolar Disorders, and Psychotic Disorders such as Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorder. Evaluation and treatment is conducted in collaboration with other members of the health care team. Adult Psychiatry board eligibility or board certification is required. Supervision and education of medical students and psychiatry residents from University of California, San Francisco, is required as part of the position, in addition to on-call responsibilities (faculty back up to the psychiatry resident).
Responsibilities
Participate in an effective clinical program with attention to patient outcome indicators
Practice within the scope of assigned privileges
Comply with the bylaws, rules and regulations of the facility and agency
Meet medical staff criteria for initial appointment and reappointment, including ongoing CME
Comply with prescribed record keeping practices in accordance with the rules, regulations and bylaws
Comply with prescribed information security policy and procedures
Work effectively with patients, families, staff, coworkers and other health care professionals
Participate in Medical Service educational activities and scheduled meetings
Comply with assigned Peer Reviews and maintaining quality assurance standards
Complete all assigned health record reviews, peer reviews, etc., within the identified timeframes
Requirements Conditions of employment:
U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment
Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959
Must be proficient in written and spoken English
You may be required to serve a probationary period
Subject to background/security investigation
Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process
Acceptable form(s) of identification required for pre-employment (I-9). Effective May 7, 2025, REAL ID considerations apply for identification
Must pass pre-employment physical examination
Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship (non-citizens per VA policy when applicable)
Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine degree from an approved school
Current, full and unrestricted medical license in the United States or DC
Residency training approved by the VA in an accredited program leading to eligibility for board certification
Board certification or eligibility in adult psychiatry
Education Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from LCME-approved (allopathic) or AOA-approved (osteopathic) medical schools. ECFMG verification may be required for foreign medical graduates as applicable.
Compensation and Benefits
Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days per year (25-26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays, CME time)
Retirement: Federal pension with possible 5% contributions to a federal 401K
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care
CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (full-time with board certification)
Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage
Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license
Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting
