Description The Anesthesia Technician II position assists the anesthesia provider in delivering patient care to pediatric surgical patients in a safe and organized manner. The Anesthesia Technician prepares equipment and work areas in all anesthetizing locations throughout the hospital for procedures requiring anesthesia. The Technician must be able to set up, operate, and maintain monitoring and anesthesia equipment to support complex cases including but not limited to cardiac and trauma. This position maintains supplies and equipment in all anesthetizing locations and stocks anesthesia supplies in carts at the point of care. The position may also provide patient transport and environmental service support as needed as a member of the Perioperative Surgical Team under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse and/or an anesthesiologist to support the Anesthesiologist, Anesthesia Assistants and Anesthesia trainees in delivery of care in various locations where anesthesia is provided.

Qualifications

Minimum Education High School Diploma or GED (Required) and completion of an approved anesthesia technician curriculum, or CNH Anesthesia Technician curriculum (Preferred) Minimum Work Experience 3 years Anesthesia Technician (Required) and 1 year Pediatrics, Trauma and Cardiac experience (Preferred) Required Skills/Knowledge Human relations and interpersonal skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to speak, read, write and understand the primary language used in the workplace; collaborate with the Anesthesia team in developing a plan of care for each patient; assist in the set-up of anesthesia equipment and supplies, ensuring all equipment is functioning before use; understand verification of exposure to sterilization process, checking the integrity of sterile packaging and opening appropriate supplies; serve as a clinical resource to support and develop peers; use supplies in a cost-effective manner to avoid waste Required Licenses and Certifications Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) Upon Hire (Required); ASATT (Preferred) Functional Accountabilities Demonstrates Competency as an Anesthesia Technician: maintains and organizes the anesthesia environment and supplies to facilitate departmental function. Prepares operating room and off-site locations for indicated procedures, including setting up, calibrating, and ensuring integrity of monitoring devices and setting up airway equipment and IV fluids. Ensures location of specialized equipment (e.g., ultrasound machines) is tracked and returned after use to a central location for next use. Consults operating room schedule and anesthesia team to determine equipment needs for all procedures; able to troubleshoot as needed. Assists the anesthesiologist in establishing, monitoring, intubation, extubation, and arterial cannulation; sets up hotlines, humidified circuits; understands concepts of Difficult Airway Management. Assembles, cleans and stocks anesthesia equipment in assigned anesthetizing locations before and after procedures; troubleshoots the anesthesia machine and equipment; sets up cardiac and physiologic monitors. Demonstrates aseptic technique per AORN and Joint Commission for all anesthesia and surgical supplies and equipment. Cleans anesthesia machines, cables, carts, blood warmers, heating blankets, units, IV poles, etc.; consults with biomed as needed. Demonstrates problem-solving techniques related to supplies, instruments, equipment in a timely, organized manner. Maintains the cleanliness and organization of the anesthesia workroom and all anesthesia work stations; maintains supply stock. Ensures operating rooms and workrooms have appropriate stock of disposable and durable medical equipment. Oversees monitoring and documentation of all anesthesia equipment for safety, quality control, preventive maintenance and cleanliness; ensures infection control standards are met. Ensures proper functioning and integrity of anesthesia equipment. Troubleshoots anesthesia machine and equipment. Replaces soda absorber granules as needed or at the end of the week. Reviews designated induction/operating room equipment daily to ensure function and availability (stretchers, oxygen tanks, gauges, monitors, suction devices). Cleans/HLD laryngoscope handles, blades, LMA and returns to proper location. Documents and seeks repair of malfunctioning anesthesia-related equipment. Assists with transport of patients to the OR. Demonstrates knowledge of risk and safety issues and uses measures to ensure optimal outcomes; speak up about unsafe behavior or performance; promote safety for patients, families, visitors and co-workers. Clean and sterilize laryngoscope handles and blades; handle sharps safely; follow disinfection and manufacturer protocols; follow lab protocols and standards for specimen handling and blood products; follow OSHA guidelines and aseptic principles. Continuously validate information needed for decision making; stop in the face of uncertainty and take time to resolve the situation; attend to important details with Stop, Think, Act and Review for self-check. Assist the anesthesia department and surgical team in emergency situations; check expiration dates of medications and return expired meds to the pharmacy; assist in between-case preparation; manage waste appropriately; demonstrate accurate, clear, and timely verbal and written communication; report patient/family concerns to the charge nurse; seek assistance when confronted with unfamiliar situations. Demonstrate accountability and professional judgment; exercise safe judgment in decision making; arrive on time; handle difficult situations appropriately; use downtime constructively; comply with departmental policies; identify learning needs and attend required meetings/in-services; participate in staff meetings and training; complete mandatory education and training; maintain clear communication; report concerns to appropriate leadership.
