Overview The Anesthesia Technician II position assists the anesthesia provider in delivering patient care to pediatric surgical patients in a safe and organized manner. The technician prepares equipment and work areas in all anesthetizing locations throughout the hospital for procedures requiring anesthesia. The technician must be able to set up, operate, and maintain monitoring and anesthesia equipment to support complex cases including, but not limited to, cardiac and trauma. The position is responsible for maintaining supplies and equipment in all anesthetizing locations and stocking anesthesia supplies in carts at the point of care. The technician supports the Anesthesiologist, Anesthesia Assistants and anesthesia trainees under the supervision of a registered nurse and/or an anesthesiologist, and may provide patient transport and environmental service support as needed.

Responsibilities

Maintains and organizes the anesthesia environment and supplies to facilitate departmental function.

Prepares operating rooms and off-site locations for indicated procedures, including setting up, calibrating, and ensuring the integrity of monitoring devices and setting up airway equipment and IV fluids.

Tracks and ensures the location of specialized equipment (e.g., ultrasound machines) and returns it to a central location after use.

Consults the operating room schedule and anesthesia team to determine equipment needs and troubleshoots as needed.

Assists the anesthesiologist in establishing, monitoring, intubation, extubation, and arterial cannulation; sets up hotlines, humidified circuits; understands the concepts of Difficult Airway Management.

Assembles, cleans, and stocks anesthesia equipment in assigned locations; troubleshoots anesthesia machines and equipment; sets up cardiac and physiologic monitors and calibrates arterial lines.

Demonstrates aseptic technique in accordance with AORN and Joint Commission standards for all anesthesia and surgical supplies and equipment.

Maintains cleanliness and organization of the anesthesia workroom and all anesthesia work stations; stocks supplies in workrooms and stations.

Ensures operating rooms and workrooms have an appropriate stock of disposable and durable medical equipment.

Monitors and documents the safety, quality control, preventative maintenance and cleanliness of anesthesia equipment; adheres to infection control standards.

Replaces soda absorber granules as needed; reviews designated induction/operating room equipment daily for function and availability (e.g., stretchers, oxygen tanks, gauges, monitors, suction devices).

Performs cleaning and sterilization of laryngoscope handles, blades, LMA components, and returns items to proper locations.

Documents and seeks repair for malfunctioning anesthesia-related equipment; assists with patient transport to the OR.

Demonstrates knowledge of risk and safety issues and takes measures to ensure optimal outcomes; speaks up about unsafe behavior or performance.

Promotes safety for patients, families, visitors and co-workers; adheres to aseptic principles and manufacturer protocols for disinfection and handling of specimens and blood products.

Completes activities following OSHA guidelines; validates information for decision making; stops in the face of uncertainty to resolve issues; communicates accurately and timely.

Assists the anesthesia department and surgical team with emergency situations; checks medication expiration dates and returns expired medications to the pharmacy.

Performs between-case preparation, manages waste appropriately, and maintains clear, timely communication.

Minimum Education Minimum Education High School Diploma or GED (Required) and Completion of an approved anesthesia technician curriculum, or CNH Anesthesia Technician curriculum (Preferred).

Minimum Work Experience Minimum Work Experience 3 years Anesthesia Technician (Required) and 1 year Pediatrics, Trauma and Cardiac experience (Preferred).

Required Skills/Knowledge

Human relations and interpersonal skills; excellent verbal and written communication.

Ability to speak, read, write and understand the primary language used in the workplace.

Collaborate with the anesthesia team in developing a plan of care for each patient.

Assist in setting up anesthesia equipment and supplies; ensure all equipment is functioning before use.

Understand sterilization verification, packaging integrity, and opening of supplies.

Serve as a clinical resource to support and develop peers; use supplies cost-effectively to avoid waste.

Required Licenses and Certifications

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) Upon Hire (Required)
