Description

Under the direction of the Blood & Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) attending physician and APP Supervisor, the Physician Assistant (PA) provides primary medical management for oncology/BMT patients. Leads by example demonstrating professional image and leadership core competencies. Acts as a liaison within the BMT Program to promote consistent medical management of the patients across the health care continuum by collaborating with the multidisciplinary care team. Performs specialized procedures such as bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture and skin biopsy. Presents patient cases during daily rounds and at the weekly BMT Clinical meetings. Provides patient/family and staff education. Supports the development and revision of BMT divisional policies and procedures. Participates in and/or initiates research. Participates in community outreach and networking with community physicians and other health care professionals. May provide care to BMT patients in the outpatient center at the Moores Cancer Center. Develops and expands role responsibilities as patient and system needs change.

Responsibilities (Summarized)

Provide primary medical management for oncology/BMT patients under supervision. Perform specialized procedures (bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture, skin biopsy). Lead rounds and participate in BMT Clinical meetings; educate patients, families, and staff. Contribute to policy/procedure development and participate in research and outreach. Collaborate with multidisciplinary care team to ensure consistent medical management. Possibly provide care in outpatient setting at Moores Cancer Center.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant program. California PA license. Current PA Certification from NCCPA. BLS/CPR and ACLS at time of hire with commitment to obtain ART within 6 months. Minimum one (1) year recent work experience as a licensed PA in Oncology, BMT, or adult critical care. Thorough knowledge of BMT processes and hematologic cancers; understanding of lab results and typical patient needs. Ability to address medical and psychosocial needs of cancer patients; strong leadership and teamwork skills. Excellent professional, verbal, and written communication abilities; comfort in group teaching and community outreach.

Preferred Qualifications

1–2 years of inpatient Hem/Onc/BMT PA experience. Knowledge of chemotherapy administration and common BMT medications. Experience in quality improvement and clinical trials eligibility. Experience identifying potential clinical trial patients.

Special Conditions

Ability to work varied hours, shifts, on-call, and locations based on center needs. Criminal background check and pre-employment physical if applicable. Ability to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain. Clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two (2) years due to credentialing eligibility.

Pay Transparency & Additional Information

Pay range: Annual Full Pay Range: $153,259 - $201,889 (prorated if appointment
