Overview

(PA) Sr. Physician Assistant, Neurological Surgery – 136398 Under general supervision of the APP Supervisor for the Department of Neurological Surgery, the PA functions as a provider of patient care in Neurosurgery and supports primary and specialized health care services to brain tumor, cerebrovascular, general, peripheral nerve and neuro-spine patients. The role includes evaluating treatments for outpatient surgery patients, coordinating with surgical services, participating in ongoing research and quality assurance studies, and acting as a liaison to physicians, mid-levels, and therapists. The position requires specialized knowledge in neurosurgery and wound care and may involve other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

Provide patient care in Neurosurgery and coordinate with established surgical services. Evaluate healthcare treatments for outpatient surgery patients. Participate in ongoing research and quality assurance activities. Serve as liaison to physicians, mid-levels, therapists, and other health care staff. Perform duties consistent with operating room standards and serve as a first assistant in operative procedures when needed. Maintain organized and detailed medical information and records. Assist in teaching and mentoring house staff, medical students, and nurses in surgical care. Engage in patient and family counseling as required. Comply with internal policies, procedures, and protocols for patient care management.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate from an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant program. California PA license. Current PA Certification from NCCPA. BLS and ACLS at time of hire with a commitment to obtain ART within six months of hire date. Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a PA in Neurosurgery, Neurology, General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, or Cardiology. Strong theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine, critical care, pharmacology, and related areas. Ability to perform comprehensive history and physical exams and formulate treatment plans. Ability to interpret data and provide clear medical reports and progress notes. Capability to function as a first assistant in operative procedures and to instruct staff in surgical care. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work with a diverse care team. Knowledge of medical ethics and legal considerations in clinical practice.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with neurosurgical procedures, including ventricular access devices and ICP monitoring where applicable. Experience in inpatient surgical care and familiarity with Epic EMR. Knowledge of UCSD Medical Center clinical operations and academic setting.

Special Conditions

Must obtain UCSD medical staff privileges and maintain them during employment. Employment subject to criminal background check and pre-employment physical. Ability to work varied hours and locations; may require evenings/nights and short-notice schedule changes. Primary work locations are Hillcrest and Rancho Bernardo, with occasional coverage at affiliate sites.

Pay and Benefits

Pay scale: $73.40 - $96.69 per hour. Annual Full Pay Range: $153,259 - $201,889 (prorated if appointment percentage
