Laboratory Consultant (35 Hour) Hybrid #250911-5609HC-001 Join to apply for the Laboratory Consultant role at State of Connecticut, Department of Public Health (DPH). The Environmental Laboratory Certification Program (ELCP) certifies laboratories that test environmental contaminants and conducts on-site inspections, proficiency testing, and document reviews. The position reports to the Supervising Environmental Analyst of ELCP. The ELCP also conducts compliance investigations.
Position Highlights
Location: 410 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, CT Work Schedule: Typically Monday - Friday Work Shift: Full-time, First Shift Work Hours: 35 hours per week Possible flexible schedule and telework in accordance with State policies after successful completion of a working test period

Responsibilities (Examples)
Perform on-site inspections at environmental laboratories Review and analyze proficiency testing results from environmental laboratories Review sample identification and tracking by the environmental laboratory Evaluate laboratory record keeping and written procedures Evaluate staff skill and ability in performance of tests and use of controls Evaluate instrumentation, equipment, safety, and quality control programs Review methods for compliance with CFR Parts 141, 136, 260, 261, and RCRA SW846 Maintain up-to-date ELCP database information Communicate technical information to diverse audiences Develop or recommend policies and standard operating procedures Provide technical assistance to environmental laboratory directors and personnel Assist with handling complaints and investigations and initiate disciplinary actions as needed Stay informed on current rules, regulations, methodologies, and equipment Provide information and technical support on regulations, methodology, quality assurance, and licensing Perform related duties as required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, regulations, and laboratory testing domains Understanding of clinical chemistry, environmental chemistry, hematology, clinical microbiology, environmental microbiology, serology, and laboratory QC procedures Immunohematology, cytology, histopathology and blood banking concepts Laboratory analysis of drinking water, wastewater, solid waste and effluent Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; calibration and use of laboratory instruments Ability to make accurate and objective observations
Minimum Qualifications
General Experience: Eight (8) years of professional laboratory experience in clinical chemistry, clinical microbiology, environmental chemistry, environmental microbiology, medical technology or related area Substitutions: College coursework in chemistry, medical technology, microbiology or related field may substitute for some experience; a Bachelor's degree allows up to four years of substitution; a Master's degree may substitute for one additional year of general experience
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with environmental laboratory data validation and data packages Experience with environmental laboratory methods Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS) Experience with proficiency testing in environmental labs Ability to communicate complex technical information effectively EPA Drinking Water Laboratory Certification Officer certification or eligibility
Special Requirements
Willingness to undergo tests or immunizations for communicable diseases Travel may be required; initial certification requirements include completing certain courses and being certified as State Certification Officer by the EPA

Work may involve exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous substances.
