Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications
To qualify, applicants must meet the basic and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending completion of training or licensing requirements may still be considered for referral and tentative selection but not for hire until all requirements are fulfilled. Current VA-employed physicians who met the initial appointment requirements under previous standards are deemed to have met the basic requirements. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited school. Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S. Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited program leading to board eligibility. Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs are eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed physicians, appointed on an intermittent or fee basis, and not considered independent practitioners. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Candidates must meet faculty appointment eligibility at the University of New Mexico. Preferred Experience: Distinguished clinical care record. Physical requirements as per VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Duties
Perform initial histories and physical exams on outpatients using CVT technology or face-to-face visits. Provide ongoing outpatient care for assigned patients. Screen outpatients to determine further care needs. Prescribe medications within scope. Order diagnostic studies such as lab tests, x-rays, and EKGs. Review and implement health promotion and disease prevention measures. Manage requests for consultations, tests, and studies. Educate and counsel patients and families on preventive care, medical conditions, and treatments. Attend staff, team, and committee meetings, and perform peer reviews. Supervise and guide Medical Residents in outpatient care management. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM (to be discussed with supervisor).
