Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who meet the initial appointment requirements are deemed to have met the basic requirements. Basic Requirements:

U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school. Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S. Residency Training: Completion of an accredited residency program leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include those accredited by ACGME, AOA, or other recognized programs deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff. Residents in approved training programs and meeting other basic requirements may be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and work under supervision. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Board eligible or certified in cardiothoracic surgery. Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, use of fingers, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, visual and hearing capabilities, and emotional stability. Duties

Design and conduct comprehensive examinations, diagnosis, treatment planning, and management of patients. Provide patient education and counseling. Perform pre-operative assessments and coordinate inpatient activities. Perform bedside procedures such as arterial line placement, bronchoscopy, wound care, thoracentesis, chest tube removal, pacing wires, intra-aortic balloon pump, and drain management. Diagnose and treat CT surgery patients, including emergency and high-acuity cases. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and participate in quality improvement initiatives. Teach and support surgical residents and fellows.
