Responsibilities

Department Addendum Department Specific Functions
The Department of Informatics and Health Data Science (DIHDS), Media Innovation Lab (MIL) at the University of Miami is ushering in a new age of healthcare investigation, innovation, and improvement by breaking down the artificial barriers that separate discovery, development, and deployment of new solutions. Investigators at The MIL are reimagining and harnessing technologies available today, while inventing the solutions of tomorrow and are aspiring to create a legacy of insight and impact and to be a trusted voice in digital health, technology and transformation.
The Research Assistant Professor will serve as the MIL site expert in bioinformatics, setting the strategic vision for the group, leading the development of data analysis approaches, and implementing bioinformatics methodologies to support the needs of the DIHDS/MIL research team. Faculty members in the Department of Informatics and Health Data Science and The Media and Innovation Lab are required to actively support the department chair and lead research, educational/mentorship, and service outreach, policy and ethical initiatives related to informatics, digital technology, and health data science.
Candidate must possess a strong computational and quantitative biology background that includes a broad understanding of key biological concepts and have significant experience in software and database engineering enabling an integrated understanding of biological data analysis as it relates to underlying biological processes.
An extensive experience with the analysis of large data sets generated by next generation sequencing is encouraged.
We prefer candidates with a strong record of accomplishments in bioinformatics, including but not limited to a proven track record of developing innovative tools and applications for computational biology, providing bioinformatics support for complex research projects involving multidisciplinary scientific teams, and a strong publication record in bioinformatics and computational biology.
Qualification for this position requires demonstrated expertise in designing and developing software, databases, and interfaces for analyzing and manipulating research data applications including expertise with simple programming using Perl/Python or Java, statistical programming, web-development, and database query through SQL.
This role collaborates with researchers to develop high throughput data processing and analysis capability.
Directs and guides database searches and the computational analysis of resulting data.
May assist in grant and other funding applications, as necessary and appropriate.
Demonstrated ability to function as part of a team. Performs other responsibilities as required.
This distribution of effort may change in future years based on your interests, department needs, and your success in obtaining extramural grant funding.
Department Specific Qualifications PhD in a mechanical engineering, quantitative/computational field including computer science, software engineering, bioinformatics, mathematics, human/statistical genetics, neuroimaging, or a related field (with an emphasis on data science or statistical analyses of human subjects’ datasets).
