Provide general inpatient clinical psychiatric/psychiatric hospitalist services to Veterans hospitalized on the Acute Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, including on-call coverage. Provide general psychiatric care of adult Veterans, including diagnostic evaluations, ongoing medication management, and brief individual therapy as indicated, working within a multidisciplinary team (nurses, social workers, psychologists) with referrals for Psychological Testing and Neuropsychological Testing as appropriate. Supervise mid-level providers, psychiatric advanced practice nurses or physician assistants and other staff as appropriate. Apply clinical judgment in selecting or adapting standard treatment approaches and develop new techniques/programs for specialized problems or populations. Treat common diagnoses such as PTSD, Anxiety Disorders, ADHD, Personality Disorders, Mood Disorders (MDD, BP), Schizophrenia, Substance Use Disorders, Dementia, and Sequela from Traumatic Brain Injury; coordinate inpatient-to-outpatient transitions as part of care. Collaborate with specialty care clinics and support staff (psychiatric pharmacists, NP/PA teams) and coordinate internal and external referrals to Neurology, Sleep, Endocrinology, and somatic treatments where indicated (e.g., Ketamine/Esketamine, TMS, ECT). Participate in quality improvement activities and performance improvement programs as required for ABPN board certification. Work Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Hours are subject to change based on agency needs. Qualifications
Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship (non-citizens may be appointed where qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA policy). Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an approved school. Current, full and unrestricted medical license in a US state, territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia. Residency training in an accredited core specialty leading to eligibility for board certification; VA-compatible residencies include ACGME or AOA approved programs, or equivalent experience as determined by the Medical Staff Executive Committee. English proficiency (spoken and written). Preferred Experience
Board Eligible/Board Certified in General Adult Psychiatry. Education and Certification
If applicable, board certification status and ECFMG certification considerations for non-US-trained physicians as described in the announcement. Active ACLS and BLS certifications are expected. Compensation and Benefits
Pay: Competitive salary with annual performance bonus and regular salary increases. Paid Time Off: 50–55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays, and possible 5 days CME absence). Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% VA contributions. Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care insurance options. CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (full-time with board certification). Malpractice: Full liability protection with tail coverage. Contract: No physician employment contract and no significant restrictions on moonlighting. Other Information
