Patient Financial Services Coordinator - Boston, MA
We are seeking a Patient Financial Services Coordinator – Transplant to join a world-renowned hospital in Boston, MA. In this role, you will manage the financial clearance process and coordinate insurance for patients undergoing transplant or Immune Effector Cell (IEC) therapy. Serving as the key liaison between clinical teams, patients, and payers, you will ensure timely authorizations, accurate billing, and complete financial readiness throughout the transplant or IEC journey.
The ideal candidate will bring 1+ years of experience in a hospital or ambulatory care setting, with a background in hospital/physician office registration, financial counseling, and billing.
This is a contract-to-hire position that will pay $22/hr within a 40-hour workweek. All qualified candidates located in MA, CT, RI, NH, ME, who are 100% remote will be considered.
Responsibilities:
Accept and process transplant and IEC assignments from the Transplant Team, initiating a comprehensive benefits review and completing necessary registration steps. Prepare patient introduction letters and maintain accurate records in patient files. Verify insurance eligibility and coverage for transplant and/or IEC services at all phases, including evaluation, donor search, treatment, and follow-up. Submit required clinical documentation to obtain insurance approvals and authorizations. Serve as a liaison with insurance case managers and medical directors, advocating on behalf of patients. Provide real-time updates to clinical teams regarding patients’ financial clearance status to support treatment planning. Assist patients and providers in navigating insurance denials and appeals, including peer-to-peer coordination. Educate patients and families on financial policies, coverage limitations, and financial assistance programs, offering guidance and support through application processes. Prepare and present Financial Waivers and Advanced Beneficiary Notices (ABNs) for cases with limited or no coverage. Ensure compliance with transplant and IEC billing protocols, including accurate billing plan updates and required administrative submissions to payers. Review all patient visits to determine transplant-related services for appropriate billing. Document all interactions and updates in designated systems, including authorization data, communications, and payer correspondence. Complete assigned work queues, projects, and other responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Health Science, Business, or a related field preferred. 1+ years of relevant experience in a healthcare setting (hospital, clinic, physician’s office), including registration, billing, or financial counseling (internships included). Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with Epic or other EMR systems is a plus. Experience in insurance verification, benefits analysis, or obtaining clinical authorizations strongly preferred. Familiarity with ICD-10 and CPT codes, medical terminology, and insurance industry standards is a plus. Strong understanding of managed care, prior authorization processes, and transplant/IEC billing practices. Knowledge of hematology/oncology or cellular therapy services preferred. Excellent communication and customer service skills, with the ability to collaborate across clinical and administrative teams. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including mathematical accuracy. Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Proven ability to build and maintain professional relationships across departments.
