The Department of Environmental Services, Environmental Quality Division, is looking to hire a Sanitary Chemist III to supervise the General Chemistry activities related to the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) compliance monitoring program. What You'll Do
Supervise subordinate Sanitary Chemists and Sanitary Laboratory Technicians in the day-to-day activities Schedule, coordinate, and supervise the collection of representative samples Supervise and conduct chemical and physical analyses of wastewater, treatment plant effluents, and receiving water and sediments according to EPA-specified procedures Operate and maintain a city-owned vehicle to obtain and transport samples from locations around the island Perform other related duties as required Special Working Conditions
Exposure to falls, cuts, toxic gases, burns, infections, and waterborne diseases Will serve as Disaster Response Worker during declared civil defense emergencies The laboratory is currently located in Honolulu but will be moving to Ewa later this year Education Requirement
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major work in chemistry or a biological science. Substitution: Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree in chemistry or a biological science, on a year-for-year basis. Education must have been completed by the time of application to be credited. Education obtained outside the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at an accredited college/university in the United States with proper documentation. Verification: List your education credentials on your application. You may be asked to furnish documentation to verify your education. If available, attach an electronic copy of your diploma and/or official transcript showing the embossed seal or applicable Foreign Credential Evaluation (FCE) to your application. Three (3) years of professional (post-bachelor's degree, non-clerical) experience in a chemical or microbiological laboratory. Such Experience Must Demonstrate Knowledge Of: the principles and practices of chemistry and microbiology related to wastewater and water liquid wastes analyses; the methods, techniques and equipment used in laboratory analysis; and environmental sanitation. Such Experience Must Also Demonstrate The Ability To: gather, organize, analyze and interpret field and laboratory data; keep records and prepare reports of laboratory and field observations and results of tests. Substitution: A Master's degree in chemistry, a biological science, or a related field may substitute for one year of professional experience. Education must be completed by the time of application.
