Function The purpose of the class is to supervise the operation of the City of Hampton's Public Safety Communications Center for an assigned shift. Assign duties to telecommunication personnel and monitors personnel performance; answer incoming calls, dispatches, records, and disperses information.
Minimum Requirements: You must meet all qualifications by the time you submit your application. Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED. Three (3) years' experience as a Public Safety Dispatcher preferred. Must not have received any formal disciplinary action during previous year. Must possess and maintain state and local certifications (i.e., CPR, EMD, and VCIN). The incumbent will be required to successfully complete a Police Department background investigation to include a polygraph examination and pre-employment screening for controlled substances. Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria. Additional Requirements
Requires effective communication with internal and external customers. Position may require working nights, weekends, holidays and extended shifts as required. Incumbents are required to work in situations of extreme stress and in emergency, life threatening situations. The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules. Extensive knowledge of and proficiency in the use of personal computers; thorough knowledge of the city's geography; general knowledge of supervisory principles and practices; ability to speak clearly and distinctively over the radio; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and ability to give clear, concise feedback; ability to develop and maintain harmonious working relationships and work effectively with diverse groups; ability to plan, organize, and assign work to others to provide appropriate coverage and efficient service; ability to exercise sound judgment and make appropriate decisions. Must be able to maintain the ability to provide credible testimony in court, to the magistrate and in other situations where credibility will be of importance.
