Job Summary
The Material Control Specialist is responsible for overseeing and enforcing key material control processes across our steel service center operations. This role leads the company's inventory control governance, manages the Customer Owned Material (COM) process, ensures Material Test Report (MTR) compliance, and purchases MRO supplies to support day-to-day operations.
In addition to owning critical compliance workflows, this position provides dotted-line guidance and oversight to teammates in our operating plants who execute inventory-related tasks. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, ERP-proficient, and capable of coordinating across departments and locations to ensure material accuracy, traceability, and readiness.
Key Responsibilities
Inventory Control Oversight Lead and enforce company inventory control processes, policies, and procedures. Oversee the cycle counting program across all facilities, ensuring consistent execution and timely issue resolution. Provide dotted-line leadership and guidance to plant-based teammates responsible for inventory activities. Monitor and report on inventory accuracy metrics, trends, and corrective actions. Support root cause analysis and process improvement for recurring inventory issues. Customer Owned Material (COM) Management
Manage and enforce the COM workflow to ensure accurate intake, tracking, and processing of customer-supplied material. Maintain system records and physical traceability for all COM material. Work cross-functionally with sales, warehouse, and operations to ensure proper handling and disposition. MTR Verification & Compliance
Review and validate Material Test Reports (MTRs) for accuracy and compliance with purchase order requirements. Ensure MTRs are correctly associated with the right material and uploaded into the ERP system. Partner with Purchasing and Quality to resolve non-conformances or missing documentation. Material Movement & Location Integrity
Submit and track material transfer requests to ensure materials are located and staged in appropriate physical and system-assigned locations. Coordinate with warehouse teams to ensure alignment between physical storage and ERP location data. MRO Purchasing (Maintenance, Repair & Operations Supplies)
Procure MRO supplies such as safety items, shop consumables, tools, and maintenance-related goods. Negotiate pricing and lead times with vendors to ensure cost-effective and timely supply. Monitor usage and reorder levels to prevent outages and reduce excess. Maintain positive supplier relationships and ensure delivery performance meets operational needs. Compliance & Continuous Improvement
Champion compliance with material traceability and documentation requirements. Identify gaps in process execution and work with cross-functional teams to implement improvements. Maintain audit-readiness of documentation related to inventory, COM, and MTR compliance.
