Overview

Evening Custodian (Sunday through Thursday) at Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools – West Wyandotte Library.

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students. The district employs more than 4,000 employees, including over 1,800 teachers. The student population includes a diverse mix of languages and backgrounds.

Job goal: The custodian is responsible for providing custodial services at the assigned site, ensuring an attractive, sanitary, and safe environment for students, staff, and visitors, performing a variety of cleaning operations, and assisting in preparing facilities for classroom activities and campus events.

Essential Functions

  • Assists with site snow removal on sidewalks, docks, and the building perimeter for access and safety.
  • Informs students and site personnel about activities, safety issues, and proper maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  • Monitors students and staff in and around work areas to prevent injuries and ensure site safety.
  • Performs building maintenance tasks (e.g., cleaning, trash removal, equipment maintenance, and periodic facility tasks) to support operations and events.
  • Prepares the site for daily operations during school hours and after-school events to ensure facilities are operational and hazard-free.
  • Responds to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and visitors with information and appropriate action or referrals.
  • Responds to immediate safety and operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, alarms) and notifies appropriate personnel.
  • Secures facilities and grounds (e.g., opens/closes doors, monitors safety equipment, conducts drills) to minimize risk and ensure safety.
  • Supports other site maintenance staff as needed to complete custodial activities.
  • Attends unit meetings and training sessions to perform job functions effectively.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.
  • Understands written procedures, writes routine documents, speaks clearly, analyzes situations to define issues and draw conclusions.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Job-related experience is desired.

  • FLSA STATUS: Hourly, Non-exempt
