Responsibilities
- The Custodian II performs moderately complex (journey-level) custodial work. Cleans, dusts, disinfects, and sanitizes to maintain a safe and healthy environment.
- Operates floor maintenance equipment such as strippers, buffers, vacuums, and extractors. Requests and restocks supplies as necessary.
- Assists in conducting inspections of buildings and equipment for cleanliness and needed repairs. Assists in performing minor building and equipment repairs and installations.
- Accountable for maintaining assigned custodial equipment in good working order. Maintains outside areas around the hospital, clears trash and debris.
- Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs other duties as assigned, including supporting agency disaster response/COOP activation with potential alternate shift patterns or locations.
- This position may be eligible to earn additional pay for work performed on maximum security locations.
- Performs custodial functions timely and with high quality (sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning windows and light fixtures) and ensures proper sanitization and disinfection per training.
- Maintains and cleans the interior and exterior of assigned buildings, empties trash, reports needed repairs, and replenishes supplies as needed.
- Coaches other custodians as needed and inspects areas for cleanliness and completed work, including minor repairs and maintenance.
- Completes documentation accurately and timely; protects confidential information. Maintains inventory and equipment records.
- Supports efforts to help patients maintain health and provide a safe environment for self, patients, and others.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, standards, and sanitation regulations.
- Knowledge of infection control principles and methods.
- Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
- Skills in the use of custodial equipment, materials, and safe handling of chemicals.
- Skills in the use and maintenance of building maintenance tools and equipment.
- Ability to stay on task and complete work timely.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods.
- Ability to work harmoniously and productively with coworkers and patients.

None
Initial Screening Criteria
- Six months work experience required.
- Experience in custodial or environmental services work in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel or other similar residential equivalent preferred.
Additional Information
- Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
- Males between ages 18-25 must be registered with Selective Service.
- All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21.
- Flexibility in work hours may be required. Overtime and/or extended hours may be required.
- Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required.
- HHSC uses E-Verify. Bring I-9 documentation on first day of work.
- Telework eligibility is possible for some positions; subject to state and agency policies.
