Highway & Roads Market Sector Director

Primary Responsibilities

Market Sector Directors (MSD) drive our business within HDR's matrix management structure. The HDR Highway & Roads (H&R) sector is the largest, representing nearly $1B annually globally. It includes clients owning and operating highways, toll roads, city, town, and local roads, and bridge structures. HDR offers services like bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning, and tolling services.

This role requires understanding of H&R clients, funding, revenue streams, and governmental structures at various levels. The responsibilities are divided into:

  1. Market leadership and business development (~70%)
  2. Staff development (20%)
  3. Support to Operations (10%)

The Director sets strategic vision, supports growth initiatives, develops staff, and maintains communication with leadership to implement plans. The role also involves expanding HDR’s client base internationally, engaging with local and global transportation agencies, and leading business development, client management, and strategic initiatives.

Key duties include overseeing market strategies, serving as a client manager, leading project pursuits, promoting HDR services, participating in industry associations, and developing strategic partnerships.

Staff development involves managing P&L, driving technical excellence, recruiting, and participating in performance reviews.

Support to operations includes monitoring performance indicators, staff workload, project delivery, risk management, and quality assurance.

Qualifications

Preferred: 20+ years in highway/bridge planning or engineering, PE license, leadership in industry associations.

Required: Bachelor’s in Engineering, 12+ years industry experience, strong communication, client management skills, business acumen, and a commitment to HDR’s culture.
