Highway & Roads Market Sector Director

Primary Responsibilities

Market Sector Directors (MSD) are part of HDR's matrix management structure that drive our business. The Highway & Roads (H&R) market sector is the largest at HDR, representing nearly $1B in annual revenue globally. It includes clients owning and operating highways, toll roads, local roads, and bridge structures, with services including bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning, and tolling services.

The primary responsibilities are divided into three areas:

  1. Market leadership and business development (+/- 70%)
  2. Staff development (20%)
  3. Support to Operations (10%)

MSDs set the vision for HDR’s strategy in the market sector, support growth initiatives, develop staff, and coordinate with leadership to achieve financial and strategic goals. They maintain regular communication with regional and area leadership to implement growth and operational plans.

The role involves engaging with US and international clients, expanding HDR’s presence outside the US, and supporting business development, client management, and strategic initiatives, including industry partnerships and memberships.

Responsibilities include

  • Overseeing the creation and implementation of strategic vision
  • Serving as a client manager for key accounts
  • Leading business development and pursuit efforts
  • Participating in industry organizations and leadership roles
  • Identifying strategic investments and partnerships
  • Developing and maintaining client relationships
  • Leading industry representation and partnerships

Staff Development

  • Managing P&L and staffing plans
  • Driving technical excellence and staff growth
  • Participating in performance reviews and talent acquisition

Support to Operations

  • Monitoring performance indicators
  • Supporting project delivery and quality assurance
  • Facilitating knowledge sharing and lessons learned

Qualifications

Preferred: 20+ years in highway/bridge planning or engineering, PE license, leadership in industry associations.

Required: Bachelor's in Engineering, 12+ years of industry experience with leadership, strong communication, client management, business skills, and a commitment to HDR’s culture.
