Highway & Roads Market Sector Director

Primary Responsibilities

Market Sector Directors (MSD) are part of HDR's matrix management structure that drive our business. The HDR Highway & Roads (H&R) market sector is the largest in the company, representing nearly $1B in annual revenue globally. It includes clients that own and operate highways, toll roads, city, town, and local roads, and bridge structures. HDR provides services such as bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning, and tolling services.

The primary responsibilities are divided into three areas:

  1. Market leadership and business development (about 70%)
  2. Staff development (20%)
  3. Support to Operations (10%)

The Market Sector Director sets the vision for HDR’s strategy to expand and serve clients in this sector, supporting growth initiatives, staff development, and strategic planning in coordination with various leadership teams. They maintain communication with regional and area leadership to implement growth and operational plans.

The role involves engaging with clients across the US and internationally, expanding HDR’s presence outside the US, and leading business development efforts, client management, and strategic initiatives to grow market share and enhance HDR's reputation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Creating and implementing strategic vision for the market sector
  • Serving as a client manager for key clients
  • Participating in project leadership and pursuit activities
  • Supporting marketing and service delivery
  • Leading industry engagement and strategic partnerships
  • Overseeing staff development and recruitment
  • Supporting operational performance and project delivery

Qualifications

Preferred: Minimum 20 years in highway or bridge planning/engineering, PE license, leadership in industry associations.

Required: Bachelor's in Engineering or related, at least 12 years of industry and leadership experience, excellent communication, client development skills, and a proactive attitude towards HDR’s culture.
