AGENCY OVERVIEW

The New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy (NMLEA), a division of the New Mexico Department of Public Safety (NMDPS), provides basic and in-service law enforcement training for police officers and telecommunicators. It oversees nine satellite law enforcement academies across the state, serving the public safety community by enforcing laws and ensuring high standards.

JOB SUMMARY

The NMDPS seeks an experienced leader for the role of Director of the NMLEA. The Director manages the Academy's operations, staff, and collaborates with statewide agencies to deliver quality training. This role also involves overseeing support staff for the Law Enforcement Standards and Training Council (NMLESTC) and working with the Law Enforcement Certification Board (NMLECB). Strong leadership and law enforcement training expertise are essential.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead daily operations and develop policies and training programs.
  • Provide leadership to instructors and staff, ensuring standards compliance.
  • Oversee curriculum development and assessment.
  • Revise policies for training and certification.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders on best practices and legislative changes.
  • Manage training delivery, scheduling, and resources.
  • Develop and oversee the budget, procurement, and funding opportunities.
  • Engage with law enforcement agencies, officials, and the community.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and oversee trainee performance.
  • Develop strategic plans for the Academy's growth and improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Management, Law, or related field. Advanced education considered with relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 15 years law enforcement experience, including 8 years in leadership.
  • Preferably certified or eligible for certification in New Mexico.
  • Experience with regulations, accreditation, and law enforcement practices.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and strategic planning skills.
  • Ability to manage confidential data and meet deadlines.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & REQUIREMENTS

Work is in a law enforcement office setting, with outdoor activities at training sites. Extensive computer use, lifting up to 25 pounds, and travel are required. Employment contingent on background checks, drug testing, and valid driver’s license.

SALARY RANGE

$68,345 – $167,592 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
