Base pay range $130,000.00/yr - $150,000.00/yr

Position Summary

HunaTek requires a Washington, DC based full-time Deputy Program Manager (DPM) to provide high-level programmatic, operational, and strategic support to a team responsible for the implementation of international nuclear security projects aligned with the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Office of Global Material Security (GMS). This position provides day-to-day operational, contract, and personnel management to a high-performing team responsible for implementing technical engagements and security partnerships.

Operating under a “mission first, people always” leadership philosophy, the DPM supports the Program Manager in fostering a culture of trust, autonomy, and professional growth. The ideal candidate is not only experienced in government contract and project management, but also passionate about cultivating a supportive, high-functioning team environment that balances mission objectives with employee well-being. The DPM will work collaboratively with U.S. government customers, contractors, consultants, and interagency stakeholders to ensure successful project outcomes while upholding contractual integrity and promoting staff engagement.

Essential Job Functions The DPM is expected to report to the customer site near the Smithsonian Metro Stop in Washington, DC five (5) days a week to interface with the team members and federal staff supporting program activities. Specific responsibilities include:

Team Leadership & Staff Development: Support a “mission first, people always” management philosophy by maintaining open communication, promoting independence, and encouraging continuous professional growth through mentoring and career development discussions.

Staff Oversight & Advocacy: Act as an advocate for contractor staff, ensuring alignment with contract-defined roles and responsibilities. Regularly meet with team members to provide feedback, resolve issues, and support performance and retention. Assist with hiring and onboarding as needed.

Contract Management: Assist the Program Manager with the full lifecycle of contract oversight, including initiation, transition, execution, growth, and closeout.

Customer Engagement: Develop and maintain strong relationships with GMS federal stakeholders, participating in regular check-ins to understand evolving needs and anticipate challenges.

Travel & Expense Management: Oversee staff travel requests and approvals, ensuring compliance with Federal Travel Regulations and internal policies. Provide guidance on expense documentation and reimbursement processes.

Skills And Qualifications Required

Demonstrated commitment to a “mission-first, people-always” leadership philosophy, prioritizing staff well-being alongside mission success.

US Citizenship Required

Active Top Secret or DOE Q security clearance or ability to obtain

Ability to report to customer site at five (5) days a week in Washington DC

Master’s degree in national security, international affairs, engineering, IT, public administration, or similar

At least 5 years’ experience in program/project management supporting government contracts within Department of Energy

At least 2 years’ experience coordinating or approving travel requests and reimbursements in compliance with the Federal Travel Regulations (FTR) and applicable agency policies

Minimum 1 year experience in contract management: managing service support or IDIQ/T&M contracts, cost/schedule control, risk mitigation, contract deliverables, scope control

Demonstrated success in maintaining customer relationships, often interfacing directly with CORs, Government PMs, senior federal leadership, and internal stakeholders

Ability to manage multi-disciplinary and geographically distributed technical, programmatic, and administrative staff, including onboarding, mentoring, performance management, and subcontractor management

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Teams, SharePoint
