Primary Purpose The Assistant Director of Campus Safety supports the leadership and daily operations of the department, ensuring the safety and security of the university community. This position serves as second-in-command in the absence of the Director and plays a key role in policy enforcement, emergency response, staff supervision, and collaborative safety initiatives across campus.

Responsibilities

Serve as acting lead in the absence of the Director of Campus Safety

Oversee security operations at assigned locations or satellite campuses

Review incident reports, initiate appropriate follow-up, and escalate matters to the Director

Ensure the safety of all campus community members and enforce university security policies and procedures

Act as liaison to external law enforcement and regulatory agencies

Assist in recruitment, training, scheduling, and performance evaluation of security staff

Ensure adequate staffing levels to meet campus safety needs

Provide guidance and support to security team members, identifying areas for development and improvement

Lead or co-lead departmental meetings and training sessions to enhance operational effectiveness

Represent the department at university meetings and functions as needed

Attend court or legal proceedings related to campus incidents as a witness or representative

Oversee timekeeping and attendance records for security personnel

Maintain a visible, accessible presence on campus, modeling the university’s commitment to safety and service

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, or a related field (advanced degree preferred)

Minimum of three years of campus safety or security experience, with at least two years in a supervisory role

Demonstrated knowledge of applicable state laws, municipal codes, and best practices in campus safety

Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

Ability to manage sensitive or emergency situations with professionalism and discretion

Proficiency with computer systems and incident reporting software

Strong decision-making and leadership capabilities

Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, as needed

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in Criminology, Conflict Resolution, or related discipline

Experience in a higher education or nonprofit setting

Physical Demands

Ability to spend long durations of the workday sitting at a desk and working on a computer

Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times

Salary and FLSA Status

FLSA Status: Exempt – Full-time, 40 hours per wk.
