Representative Duties

This course is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), a visual-gesture language used by the deaf community in the United States and Canada, and focuses on the development of basic conversation skills emphasizing the culture and history of ASL through in-class and out-of-class requirements.

Identify and demonstrate finger spelling, numbers, and vocabulary at a beginning level. Describe and demonstrate American Sign Language classifiers, grammar structure, facial expression, and body movement. Compose ASL Gloss translation from English. Explain basic cultural aspects of the Deaf. Examine and show an understanding of history, culture, and civilization of the Deaf world.

This assignment may include teaching at other campus sites, day or evening classes, weekend classes, large classes, distance learning and multiple teaching methodologies.

Minimum Qualifications

Required: Bachelor degree and 2 years related professional experience

OR Associate degree and 6 years related professional experience

OR The equivalent. Certain combinations of education, experience, and other accomplishments in the field may be judged as equal to the stated minimum qualifications for these positions. Candidates who feel they possess such equivalent qualifications must request and submit an APPLICATION FOR EQUIVALENCE form. Supporting documents must be included with the completed form. AND - A demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

  • Ability to assess student learning outcomes;
  • Knowledge of computers and willingness to explore new technologies that would benefit the program;
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the California community college mission;
