Overview
Join the Torts Division - Defending Those Who Serve the People of Washington Everyday. The Torts Division in the Washington State Attorney General’s Office seeks trial attorneys to practice in state and federal courts and to provide legal and risk management advisory services to state agencies and employees. The positions are based in Spokane, Washington, with offices in Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia (Tumwater), and Spokane. The division offers opportunities for telework in a hybrid work environment. Responsibilities
Represent the State and its agencies and employees in tort claims and lawsuits arising from acts or omissions performed in official duties, including advising and working with client agencies and risk managers. Develop and execute legal strategy, conduct discovery (affirmative and defensive), communicate case developments timely, and lead trial teams in jury and bench trials. Handle cases across diverse theories of liability and a wide range of subject matters, including premises liability, medical negligence, employment discrimination, motor vehicle accidents, maritime injuries on Washington ferries, and other torts. Work with diverse clients and theories, continually develop advocacy skills in oral and written forms, and engage in appellate briefing and argument as appropriate. Collaborate with investigative staff, client agencies, the Office of Risk Management, and other AGO attorneys in a team-oriented environment. Qualifications
Mandatory: graduated from a ABA-accredited law school or completed WSBA Rule 6 Law Clerk Program and licensed to practice law in Washington State; active pursuit of admission will be considered. Strong analytical, advocacy, and problem-solving skills; excellent legal judgment; ability to work in a collaborative team environment with litigation support and investigative staff. Five or more years of progressive legal experience with a strong foundation in civil litigation is preferred, including depositions, active civil motions practice, working with expert witnesses, alternative dispute resolution, trial experience in state and/or federal court, briefing and arguing cases on appeal, and interacting with high-level client representatives. Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and communication styles is valued. Note: Torts litigation experience is advantageous but not essential; relevant subject matter experience is also valued. Benefits and Compensation
Salary range: $82,212 – $153,996, with placement according to Appendix B of the AWAAG CBA. Longevity pay of 5% after five years of state service.
