Overview UC Davis – California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) is seeking a Senior Manager, Primate Medicine to provide veterinary medical services for in-patient and outpatient areas across a large non-human primate colony. The CNPRC is an Organized Research Unit at UC Davis conducting interdisciplinary research on significant human health problems where non-human primates are the animal of choice. This role supports CNPRC academic research goals and objectives and may include an academic clinical appointment.

$122,300.00 - $259,900.00 / annual

Location California National Primate Research Center, UC Davis

Position Description Under the general direction of the Assistant Director for Primate Services, the Managing Senior Veterinarian will provide the appropriate clinical environment to support biomedical research directed toward significant human health issues and nonhuman primate health and biology. The Senior Manager will ensure that clinical and research support services meet CNPRC academic research goals and objectives. Responsibilities include managing primate medicine unit operations to deliver high-quality clinical/medical, surgical, dental, and nutritional diagnostics, treatment, and preventative care for a large non-human primate colony; guiding, training, and supervising professional veterinarian staff in research protocol design, implementation, and program development; and collaborating on clinical research design and veterinary medical care management with staff scientists and research investigators.

Additional duties include participating in IACUC or related activities, maintaining awareness of USDA, NIH and other regulations, and ensuring compliance with AAALAC guidelines. There may be an opportunity for a non-salary earning academic clinical appointment at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology as a Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor.

Responsibilities

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary medical college or school and eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California. Board-certified by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.

Experience working with a variety of nonhuman primate species or other complex animal models; experience with meeting animal care, housing, and research regulatory requirements; experience in grant proposal preparation, preferably NIH format.

Proven clinical care program management focused on clinical and surgical skills.

Knowledge of institutional, local, state, national, and international rules and regulations governing the use and care of laboratory animals (USDA Animal Welfare Act, ILAR guidelines).

Preferred Qualifications:

USDA accreditation to perform federally mandated duties associated with operation of a laboratory animal research facility.

Contributions to the field of laboratory animal research and/or medicine; familiarity with BioSafety, crisis management, and occupational health and safety training.

Knowledge of gross necropsy procedures and basic histopathology of nonhuman primates; ability to teach in classroom, clinical settings, seminar format, and one-to-one.

Ability to give written and oral presentations at national and international meetings.

Strong managerial experience and demonstrated expertise in supporting biomedical research and collaboration with investigators.
