The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking an Organization Manager/Project Engineer to provide leadership, management, and engineering oversight for a field office delivering critical design and construction projects in the Olympic Region. This role ensures projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality, safety, and stewardship. The Project Engineer will foster a balanced workplace that supports professional growth, workforce diversity, employee safety, and pride in ownership while serving as a local WSDOT representative to legislators, local agencies, industry partners, and the public. Through effective management controls and adherence to WSDOT policies, this position ensures cost-effective designs, constructable deliverables, and well-administered construction contracts. This role directly supports WSDOT’s strategic goals in Workforce Development, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and Resilience for Washington’s transportation infrastructure. What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Project Engineer will: Lead and manage a field office delivering design and construction projects on schedule, within budget, and to quality standards. Oversee design approvals, construction contract administration, project reporting, and contractor payments to ensure compliance with policies and standards. Collaborate with internal staff, external agencies, contractors, and stakeholders to coordinate project delivery and resolve conflicts. Develop and implement project communication and outreach strategies with region management and communications teams. Coach and mentor staff by promoting professional growth, employee engagement, safety, diversity, and a balanced workplace culture. Ensure compliance with safety programs, labor laws, Collective Bargaining Agreements, and training or licensing requirements for staff. Evaluate staff performance, set goals, and implement strategies to optimize resources and enhance project delivery outcomes. Support emergency operations by assessing infrastructure, restoring command and control, coordinating resources, and ensuring public safety. Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are

required : Professional Engineer Licensure : Holds a current Professional Engineer (PE) license in Washington State, or in another state with the ability to obtain Washington licensure within six (6) months of employment. Engineering Leadership & Contract Management : Demonstrated strong engineering background with proven experience managing construction contracts and supervising engineering staff to deliver complex transportation projects. Program Planning, Decision-Making & Project Accountability : Ability to apply in-depth knowledge of design, construction, and contract administration principles to establish goals, monitor progress, make timely decisions, and ensure transportation projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and to quality, environmental, and organizational standards. Leadership & Management : Demonstrated ability to supervise, coach, and develop employees to meet organizational goals and maintain a productive, inclusive, and safety-focused work environment. Communication & Stakeholder Engagement : Skills to communicate effectively with employees, leadership, and the public while evaluating and responding to stakeholder needs. Respect and Equity : Demonstrates the ability to contribute to a work environment that fosters respect, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all. In addition to the above, the following is also required: A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a state-owned vehicle. Ability to perform periodic weekend and evening work as needed for delivery or emergency response. It is

that qualified candidates also have: Advanced Engineering & Management Experience : Possesses progressively responsible experience as a licensed professional engineer in highway or bridge construction/design and supervisory experience managing a diverse workforce. In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
