Overview
Under general direction, the Associate Engineer performs professional engineering work in the field and office and supervises the work of junior and assistant engineers, technicians, inspectors, surveyors and other related personnel engaged in engineering projects.
Responsibilities
Preparing engineering designs, drawings and specifications; preparing cost and quantity estimates for necessary labor, materials and equipment associated with construction, contractors, suppliers, installation, repair, restoration and maintenance.
Providing engineering support to operations staff; reviewing existing conditions and conducting studies of processes by identifying, obtaining and analyzing samples and data; analyzing and resolving problems to ensure compliance with regulatory and performance standards and specifications.
Supervising the preparation of detailed engineering drawings, specifications and calculations; assigning and reviewing the work of subordinate staff and consultants; determining resources necessary to complete assigned work.
Reviewing plans, permit applications and specifications developed by staff, consultants and contractors; verifying quantities, dimensions, safety requirements, and quality of work for engineering projects; preparing and supervising the preparation of a wide variety of technical engineering reports and other documentation.
Interviewing, selecting, training, monitoring, evaluating and counseling staff; preparing a variety of bid documents; reviewing and analyzing bids; and conducting meetings and making presentations. Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Three (3) years of verifiable professional engineering experience of which two (2) years of professional experience equivalent to the City & County of San Francisco Class 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher.
Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Civil, Traffic, or Transportation Engineering.
Substitutions:
Candidates licensed in other states who otherwise meet the minimum requirements but do not possess the California license may file and, if successful, will be placed under waiver on the eligible list until the required California license is presented.
There is no substitution for the required two years of work experience equivalent to a 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher.
A Masters degree in Transportation (Traffic) Engineering disciplines may substitute for one year of work experience in the environmental specialty.
A Ph.D. in Transportation (Traffic) Engineering disciplines may substitute for two years of work experience in the environmental specialty.
As a new recruitment for this classification will be opening shortly after the eligible list for this one has been adopted, there is no general waiver available for City and County of San Francisco employees who have six months experience as a 5203 Assistant Engineer, but less than the required experience for this position.
License or Certificate:
Some positions may require a valid driver license.
Working Conditions:
Some positions may require specific lifting up to 50 pounds; climbing ladders; working in high places and confined spaces; exposure to various weather conditions and outdoors; bending, sitting, and walking for extended periods of time and over uneven surfaces. Positions may require specific schedules which may include weekends, holidays, part time, nights, and/or overtime.
