City and County of San Francisco Job Description : Under general direction, the Associate Engineer performs professional engineering work in the field and office and supervises the work of junior and assistant engineers, technicians, inspectors, surveyors and other related personnel engaged in engineering projects. The essential functions may include: preparing engineering designs, drawings and specifications; preparing cost and quantity estimates for labor, materials and equipment; providing engineering support to operations staff; reviewing existing conditions and conducting studies; analyzing and resolving problems to ensure compliance with regulatory and performance standards; supervising the preparation of technical drawings, specifications and calculations; assigning and reviewing work of staff and consultants; determining resources necessary to complete assigned work; reviewing plans, permit applications and specifications; verifying quantities, dimensions, safety requirements, and quality of work; preparing and supervising a wide variety of technical reports and documentation; interviewing, selecting, training, monitoring, evaluating and counseling staff; preparing bid documents and reviewing bids; conducting meetings and making presentations. Performs other related duties as required. Qualifications Three (3) years of verifiable professional engineering experience, of which two (2) years must be professional experience equivalent to City & County of San Francisco Class 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher. Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Mechanical Engineering. Substitutions Candidates licensed in other states who otherwise meet the minimum requirements but do not possess the required California license may apply; if successful, they will be placed under waiver on the resulting eligible list until the California license is presented. There is no substitution for the required two years of work experience equivalent to a 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher. As a new recruitment for this classification will be opening shortly after the eligible list is adopted, there is no general waiver available for City employees with six months of experience as a 5203 Assistant Engineer but less than the required experience to be admitted to the exam process. Other Requirements Some positions may require a valid driver license. Working conditions may include lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, working in high places and confined spaces, exposure to various weather conditions, and extended periods of sitting, bending and walking on uneven surfaces. Schedules may include weekends, holidays, part time, nights, and/or overtime.
