Under general direction, the Associate Engineer performs professional engineering work in the field and office and supervises the work of junior and assistant engineers, technicians, inspectors, surveyors and other related personnel engaged in engineering projects. The essential functions may vary depending on assignment and include: preparing engineering designs, drawings and specifications; preparing cost and quantity estimates for necessary labor, materials and equipment; providing engineering support to operations staff; reviewing existing conditions and conducting studies; analyzing and resolving problems to ensure compliance with regulatory and performance standards; supervising the preparation of detailed drawings, specifications and calculations; assigning and reviewing the work of staff and consultants; determining resources necessary to complete assigned work; reviewing plans, permit applications and specifications; verifying quantities and quality of work; preparing engineering reports and other documentation; interviewing, selecting and training staff; preparing bid documents and reviewing bids; conducting meetings and making presentations. Qualifications

Three (3) years of verifiable professional engineering experience, of which two (2) years must be professional experience equivalent to City & County of San Francisco Class 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher. AND Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Civil Engineering. Substitutions

Candidates licensed in other states who meet the minimum requirements but do not possess the required California license may file for this examination and will be placed under waiver on the resulting eligible list until the California license is presented. There is no substitution for the required two years of work experience equivalent to a 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher. There is no general waiver available for City employees with six months of experience as a 5203 Assistant Engineer who are short of the required experience for this position. License or Certificate

Some positions may require a valid driver license. Working Conditions

Some positions may require lifting up to 50 pounds; climbing ladders; working in high places and confined spaces; exposure to various weather conditions and outdoors; bending, sitting, and walking for extended periods and over uneven surfaces. Schedules may include weekends, holidays, part time, nights, and/or overtime. Verification

The questionnaire obtains information regarding the applicant's experience relative to the Minimum Qualifications and is used to determine final scores and rank on the eligible list. Eligible List/Score Report: A confidential eligible list will be created for certification purposes. The duration of the list is 6 months and may be extended with approval.
