Unit Director, Benioff Children's Hospital Emergency Department Emergency Dept | Full Time | 85694BR Job Summary: Reporting to the UCSF Benioff Children's ED & Trauma Services Administrative Service Line Director, the Unit Director of the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland Emergency Department (ED) has 24-hour responsibility for the department and management of nursing and ancillary personnel, and patient care in the Emergency Department. This role provides administrative leadership and direction to the department including planning, directing, financial performance, performance improvement, quality improvement, human resource management, evaluation of care, and service initiatives. Provide 24/7 leadership and oversight for the operations of the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland. Ensure compliance with all regulatory, quality, and safety standards (e.g., The Joint Commission, CMS, state and local regulations). Develop, implement, and evaluate policies and procedures that support effective and efficient clinical practice. Promote a culture of excellence in pediatric emergency care through staff engagement, accountability, and evidence-based practice. Manage department budget, including staffing, supplies, and capital resources; ensure financial performance aligns with targets. Collaborate with physician leadership to optimize patient throughput, quality of care, and family satisfaction. Recruit, develop, mentor, and retain a high-performing multidisciplinary team, including nurses and support staff. Lead quality improvement initiatives, including monitoring and improving clinical outcomes, patient experience, and operational metrics. Serve as a liaison between UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland and other hospital departments, ensuring coordinated care and communication. Champion staff education, professional development, and training in pediatric emergency nursing. Respond to critical incidents, patient or family concerns, and staff issues with professionalism and urgency. Serve as subject matter expert and operational leader for all activities related to the hospital helipad, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant air transport operations. The Unit Director works closely with the inter-professional team and represents UCSF Health / BCH Pediatric Services for specific projects or initiatives at local hospitals or community agencies and serves as a liaison for local and regional emergencies. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $253,900 - $269,400 (Annual Rate). UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland's Emergency Department provides comprehensive emergency care for infants, children, and adolescents, treating the full spectrum of illnesses and injuries. The department delivers highly complex, compassionate care to a diverse patient population, with a strong focus on serving those requiring urgent or emergent medical attention. As the only freestanding pediatric hospital in Oakland, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland is an American College of Surgeons-verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and a designated Pediatric Critical Care Receiving Facility for Alameda County. The Emergency Department serves as a regional referral center, supporting physicians and healthcare providers across the region with expert consultation and treatment for children with time-sensitive medical needs. Patients are cared for across a broad range of life-threatening medical, traumatic, and surgical conditions. The Emergency Department team includes interdisciplinary personnel who, while not reporting directly to the Unit Director, collaborate closely to support patient care. These roles include Respiratory Therapists (RTs), Child Life Specialists (CLSs), Discharge Coordinators (DCCs), Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Behavioral Health (BH), Security, Registration, and Social Workers (SWs). Required Qualifications

Bachelors Degree or Masters Degree in Nursing required Registered Nurse in the State of California AHA Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) Minimum two (2) years of pediatric ED experience (within the past 5 years) clinical ED experience Recent administrative oversight in an Emergency Department environment; for example, previous experience as an Assistant Nurse Manager, charge nurse or other similar role Demonstrated skills to effectively supervise clinicians and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with a patient care unit Strong knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments Strong hospital management experience, with progressive and in-depth expertise in patient care services Knowledge of hospital / clinic operations in a hospital or medical center setting; knowledge of appropriate professional standards for the department and team Strong knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes Knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management systems used in nursing units or departments Knowledge of Lean principles, bedside shift report, hourly rounding Excellent leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff from all disciplines Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives Excellent communications and interpersonal skills to foster and promote an environment for effective communication and collaborative decision making across multiple units and disciplines Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within 6 months of start date Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 6 months of start date Preferred Qualifications
