Overview

This position is in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Chillicothe VA Medical Center. The position is in the HVAC Shop, Facilities Management Service (FMS) and works under the direct supervision of the Air Conditioner (AC) Mechanic Supervisor. The primary purpose of the position involves the installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, overhaul, and modification of all medical center refrigeration, air conditioning systems, air compressors and medical vacuum pumps.

Duties

  • Installs and operates complete air conditioning systems and refrigeration systems.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, maintains, and modifies complete air conditioning and refrigeration systems, including electrical, refrigerant, mechanical, electronic, and pneumatic aspects.
  • Works on electronic controls of air handlers, and frequency drives.
  • Troubleshoots, maintains, repairs, and monitors the Building Automation System.
  • Operates equipment by reading and recording meters, gauges, and recorders, establishing historical data, and starting/stopping equipment.
  • Performs pneumatic maintenance and inspections to keep equipment operating at optimum efficiency and reliability.
  • Maintains cleanliness of inside and outside of systems, including changing/cleaning filters, defrosting coils, cleaning and sanitizing ice machines, and inspecting/maintaining fire and smoke dampers.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs air compressors used for control air, medical air and vacuum, and other air compressors.
  • Provides information on proper types and sizing of air conditioning systems and refrigeration equipment.

Physical Requirements

Work assignments require light to moderate to sometimes strenuous physical effort. Frequently lifts, carries, or handles items weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally handles items heavier than 50 pounds with assistance. May work in sitting, standing, stooping, crouching positions for extended periods. Frequent walking, standing, climbing, bending, reaching. Occasional work on roofs, ladders, scaffolds, and lifting equipment.

Conditions of Employment

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Suitable for Federal employment, determined by a background investigation
  • Selective Services Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • English proficiency (written and spoken)

  • EPA Certification
  • Pre-employment physical examination
  • Current state-issued Driver’s License
