Overview
This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Hampton VA Medical Center (VAMC), in the Maintenance and Repair Section of Engineering Services. The primary duties are maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
Duties
The purpose of this position is to perform installation, maintenance, and repair of utility systems within a facility. Duties include repairing and modifying a variety of equipment and systems that achieve regulated climatic conditions and relate to operating air conditioning systems for large buildings or complexes. Tasks include installing, maintaining, and repairing commercial and industrial systems and areas with special requirements.
Work involves diagnosing faults, repairing large systems to control cooling and heating, humidity, filtration, and air circulation. Installations and repairs condition the air for structures such as warehouses, hospitals, and large office buildings. Inspect components to identify leaks, perform prescribed tests, and troubleshoot to minimize downtime. Work with compressors (gear, reciprocating, centrifugal, or rotary), refrigerant controls, and motor controls to protect equipment from overload or overheating. Dismantle, repair, and reassemble pumps, compressors, chillers, receivers, and evaporators; install and align motors and drives; and plan test procedures. Some assignments involve areas with sensitive equipment (e.g., data centers, operating rooms, clean rooms).
The position requires a valid state driver’s license and a CFC Reclaimer’s Card from an EPA-approved course.
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Flexibility to work outside the normal tour of duty, including weekends and holidays, may be required.

Physical Requirements: Frequently lifts and transports parts and equipment up to 50 pounds; work may require scaffolding and working in hard-to-reach places. Long periods of stooping, kneeling, bending, and stretching.
Working Conditions: Occasionally in drafty attic spaces and cramped areas; may involve exposure to escaping gases during emergency repairs.
