Job Description

Under general direction, the Associate Engineer performs professional engineering work in the field and office and supervises the work of junior and assistant engineers, technicians, inspectors, surveyors and other related personnel engaged in engineering projects. The essential functions may include: preparing engineering designs, drawings and specifications; preparing cost and quantity estimates for construction; providing engineering support to operations staff; reviewing existing conditions and conducting studies; analyzing problems to ensure compliance with regulatory and performance standards; supervising preparation of drawings and calculations; assigning and reviewing work; determining resources needed; reviewing plans, permits and specifications; verifying quantities, dimensions and safety; preparing technical reports; interviewing, selecting, training, and counseling staff; preparing bid documents and analyzing bids; conducting meetings and presentations. Responsibilities

Prepare engineering designs, drawings and specifications; prepare cost and quantity estimates for labor, materials and equipment. Provide engineering support to operations staff; review existing conditions and conduct studies. Analyze and resolve problems to ensure compliance with standards and specifications. Supervise preparation of engineering drawings, specifications and calculations; assign and review work of staff and consultants. Determine resources necessary to complete work; review plans, permit applications and specifications. Verify quantities, dimensions, safety requirements and quality of work; prepare and review reports and documentation. Interview, select, train, monitor, evaluate and counsel staff; prepare bid documents and review bids; conduct meetings and presentations. Qualifications

Three (3) years of verifiable professional engineering experience, of which two (2) years must be equivalent to the City & County of San Francisco Class 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher. Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Civil, Traffic, or Transportation Engineering. Substitutions

Candidates licensed in other states who meet minimum requirements may file and will be placed under waiver until California license is presented. There is no substitution for the required two years of work experience equivalent to a 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher. Masters degree in Transportation Engineering may substitute for one year of work experience in the environmental specialty. Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering may substitute for two years of work experience in the environmental specialty. License or Certificate

Some positions may require a valid driver license. Working Conditions

Some positions may require lifting up to 50 pounds; climbing ladders; working in high places and confined spaces; exposure to weather; bending, sitting, and walking for extended periods; schedules may include weekends, holidays, nights, and/or overtime. Verification
