Overview

Futures Without Violence seeks a skilled, mission-aligned Controller to lead the organization’s accounting operations and steward its financial integrity through a period of growth and innovation. With a $23 million annual budget and $85 million in net assets—including two related real estate entities and the forthcoming Courage Museum—this is a pivotal moment in FUTURES’ financial evolution. Reporting to the CFO/COO and working closely with the Director of Grants and Contracts Administration and the Director of Museum Finance, the Controller will serve as a strategic finance leader and thought partner within the organization. This is a full-time, exempt position. The salary range starts at $145,000 annually. Key Responsibilities

Accounting Operations and Team Leader: Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, banking, corporate credit card activity, and general ledger management. Supervise and support two direct reports—the Accounting Manager and Staff Accountant—through coaching and ongoing professional development. Collaborate with the Director of Grants and Contracts Administration, Director of Museum Finance, and CFO/COO to ensure a coordinated and high-performing finance function. Financial Management and Reporting: Lead the monthly and annual financial close processes; review and approve all journal entries and reconciliations. Prepare monthly consolidated financial statements for the organization and its two related real estate entities. Develop and maintain internal financial reports, including monthly grant statements, purchase order reports, and budget variance analyses. Support quarterly certifications for budget managers and provide financial insights that inform programmatic and organizational decision-making. Strategic Financial Planning and Systems Development: Participate in organization-wide budgeting and forecasting efforts. Manage the annual audit process and the preparation of the Form 990 and other required filings. Drive improvements in financial systems and practices, including automation of manual processes and upgrades to financial software. Ensure financial procedures align with GAAP and federal/state regulations. Lead the negotiation of the organization’s annual indirect cost rate with federal agencies. Identify opportunities to increase financial efficiency and cost-effectiveness across departments. Qualifications

Advanced degree in accounting or finance; CPA (or equivalent) strongly preferred. Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in nonprofit accounting, including at least five years of supervisory responsibility. Deep understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, compliance, and funder reporting—particularly with federal grants. Experience with financial statement preparation, audit coordination, and the development of internal controls. Strong proficiency in Financial Edge (Blackbaud) or similar accounting systems preferred; advanced Excel skills required. Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor finance staff while managing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment. Experience with technology implementation and financial automation strongly desired. Familiarity with construction project accounting, real estate entities, or museum operations is a plus. Commitment to equity, integrity, and the mission of Futures Without Violence. The salary starts at $145,000 annually with eligibility for step increases.
