Tesla Motors, Inc.
Safety Design Engineer, Energy Products
Tesla Motors, Inc., Palo Alto, California, United States, 94306
What to Expect
Tesla Energy is bringing battery, solar, and charging technologies to the grid, establishing new industries and defining the future of renewable energy ecosystems. This team is at the forefront of enabling this vision by ensuring critical safety systems of highly energy-dense products work as intended.
As a safety design engineer, you will drive the design of battery energy systems to ensure and maintain Tesla's robust safety record. You will own the design of safety-critical hardware from design conception to mass production. Additionally, you will be assigned as the responsible safety engineer of a program, take charge of the validation process, and build the case for robust product safety. In doing so, you will be engaging in safety-critical scenarios across electrical, thermal, mechanical, and even power electronics disciplines.
The role is collaborative and cross-functional, requiring extensive interfacing with teams including systems engineering, parallel design teams, electrical/firmware engineering, and abuse testing, to name a few. Our team is composed of individuals who are thoughtful, fast-moving, self-motivated, love to solve difficult problems, quick to take up ownership and responsibility, and are team players.
What You'll Do
Ownership of the safety for new and existing Tesla Energy products, ensuring the designed parts and system meet Tesla's internal and regulatory safety requirements and can successfully scale into mass production
Ownership of safety-critical components from design conception to mass production
Provide safety thinking and coverage from the cell, to battery, to product-level
Perform component and system-level FMEA against Tesla's core safety requirements to identify potential causes of failures in abusive scenarios
Utilize FMEA outputs to inform test scenarios and coverage
Develop and execute safety test validation plans in collaboration with parallel test engineering teams
Perform analysis of test results with thorough data review and fundamentals-based investigation to inform and drive design improvements
Developnew technologies to promote safety and efficiencies in our products to maintain Tesla's cutting edge
Ensure end-to-end traceability and produce a closed-loop safety case
What You'll Bring
2-3 years of product design experience
Bachelor's Degree or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
Proficiency in CAD modeling, CATIA V5/6 a plus
Excellent first principles understanding of structural mechanics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics with relevant experience
Experience performing FMEA/hazard analysis, scrutinizing safety-critical systems, and driving design changes to mitigate risk
System-level, big-picture thinking
Experience with high volume production and structural/thermal/fluids analysis is preferred
Collaborative team player with strong technical communication and bias towards action-oriented solutions
Familiarity with battery cell manufacturing and design, cell characteristics, and module design is a plus
