WindBorne Systems
Overview
WindBorne Systems is looking for an
Embedded Electrical Engineer
to run hardware design, initial bringup, hardware debugging, and manufacturing support of flight hardware and ground support systems. You will jump between PCB design, firmware debugging, and component sourcing, with a focus on delivering robust designs quickly and at scale. You will design systems that operate from -70°C to +40°C using components rated for different conditions, while optimizing for weight and power. The role emphasizes hands-on bench work, debugging, and rapid iteration to keep PCBA turnaround times short and ensure reliable performance in challenging environments. We are building a large balloon-based weather constellation and need engineers who enjoy solving practical problems, contributing to the big picture, and getting their hands dirty in the details of building complex hardware. Responsibilities
Design, prototype, and test PCBs for flight and ground systems Develop firmware for initial bringup of new boards and for testing existing boards Troubleshoot and resolve the most pressing hardware issues Conduct bench and environmental testing to validate electrical systems under extreme conditions Collaborate with mechanical engineers to ensure proper integration on a vehicle with many PCBs and custom parts Support flight operations with troubleshooting of deployed hardware via realtime telemetry Coordinate PCBA manufacturing for both R&D and production Skills and Qualifications
Required Strong fundamentals in embedded circuit and system design Hands-on experience troubleshooting circuit boards and electronic assemblies Ability to read schematics and datasheets Familiarity with embedded firmware development (C/C++) Familiarity with common communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART) Experience with PCB layout and design tools (Altium) Comfort with lab equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, and logic analyzers Interest in the underlying physics Enjoy applying creative out-of-the-box solutions to reduce part count and complexity Nice to have Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or a related field Interest in RF system development and antenna design Deep knowledge of power management circuit design Ability to solder 0402 components by hand Salary range consideration: $100k-160k; offers adjusted to market rates based on background and experience 401(k), health/dental/vision insurance (100% covered), unlimited PTO Incentive Stock Option Plan Office food and beverages (minimum 2 catered meals per week) Location
