Community Organizing and Power Building Specialist The San Diego LGBT Community Center is seeking a Community Organizing and Power Building Specialist to support, coordinate, and implement The Center's community organizing, engagement, empowerment, and advocacy efforts. This role advances LGBTQ+ internal and external organizing priorities, leads digital organizing and grassroots campaigns, and coordinates strategy for LGBTQ+ political power campaigns in collaboration with the Senior Director of Strategic Communications & Marketing and the Chief Impact Officer.

Overview Under the direction of the Director of Advocacy & Civic Engagement, the Community Organizing and Power Building Specialist contributes to The Center’s civic engagement and advocacy work, with a focus on building community power, volunteering, and coalition engagement.

Primary Roles & Responsibilities

Community Organizing and Building Community Power (Internal): lead on-the-ground organizing and implementation of civic engagement campaigns and activities.

Collaborate with The Center’s Communications and Marketing team to develop branded organizing and outreach materials.

Produce post-campaign reports tracking work outcomes and political impact for multiple audiences.

Lead the Fierce Advocacy and Civic Engagement (FACE) Volunteer Team to build and sustain a reliable volunteer base for power building initiatives.

Design and deliver training for FACE Volunteer onboarding based in community organizing principles and mobilization efforts.

Maintain and monitor the FACE volunteer email list for program updates and opportunities.

Recruit, train, and manage FACE volunteers to meet overall goals with staff input and support.

Support the development and implementation of the Young Professionals Council (YPC) Academy program.

Collaborate with the Policy and Advocacy Coordinator to co-liaise with the Veterans Wall of Honor Advisory Council and coordinate the annual Veterans Wall of Honor Induction Ceremony.

Prepare monthly and quarterly reports on existing campaigns; complete compliance reporting related to power building activities.

During mobilization campaigns, report daily and weekly tallies on volunteers canvassing and field activities.

Coordinate strategies to increase voter engagement and turnout; build a strong base of active LGBTQ+ community members for advocacy.

External: lead the implementation of the center’s civic engagement strategy for nonpartisan campaigns (elections, census, redistricting) and expand voter empowerment.

Organize and mobilize the LGBTQ+ community to participate in engagement efforts influencing the San Diego region; engage volunteers through FACE-branded events.

Coordinate presence of The Center at major mobilizing events and develop relationships with external organizations.

Represent The Center at external community events aligned with the Public Affairs Department.

Develop and maintain working relationships with external organizations and coordinate the Center’s presence at mobilizing events.

Communications: work with the Communications team to communicate The Center’s organizing efforts to staff, donors, volunteers, and the LGBTQ+ community; ensure messaging is shared on The Center’s social media platforms.

Required Qualifications

Education/Experience: Minimum three (3) years of community organizing or civic engagement campaign experience, and minimum two (2) years of experience in an electoral campaign.

Professional Skills: Demonstrated expertise in at least two areas, such as running field canvassing programs, leading trainings, engaging with grassroots organizations, engaging with elected officials, community event planning, electoral campaigns, experience with PDI systems, or nonprofit compliance in a C3/C4 setting.

Knowledge: Understanding of California and San Diego County lobbying compliance laws; experience leading power-building campaigns; experience serving LGBTQ+ communities or other marginalized populations.

Personal Skills: Outgoing and personable; familiarity with LGBTQ+ communities and The Center’s work.

Technology: Intermediate skills in MS Office Suite.

Language: Fluency in English.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/Experience: Experience with statewide or regional campaigns; formal training in community organizing, political science, or related field.

Professional Skills: Experience developing training curricula; coalition building or cross-sector collaborations; familiarity with nonprofit compliance and campaign finance regulations in a C3/C4 structure.

Language: Fluency in Spanish and English.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation: The pay range for this position is $29.42 - $30.30 per hour and is commensurate with experience. This is a Full-Time Regular Non-Exempt position.
