Overview
The San Francisco Environment Department (SF Environment) advances climate protection and enhances quality of life for all San Franciscans. SF Environment is a department within the City and County of San Francisco, a local government committed to innovation, leadership and collaboration in creating environmental change. The department focuses on zero waste, reducing toxic hazards, environmental justice, sustainable transportation, clean energy infrastructure, greening the built environment, and protecting the urban forest. We are hiring two (2) Community Engagement Associates to support grassroots outreach and engagement strategies within the Community Partnerships and Engagement Program, which includes the Community Engagement Team, the Environmental Education Team, and the Racial Equity Team. Some duties may involve bilingual outreach and working with diverse communities. Responsibilities
Conduct outreach and engagement activities to promote the Department’s environmental programs and policies, including door-to-door outreach, supporting volunteer programs, attending community events, tabling, making phone calls, sending emails, presenting to groups, and administering surveys. Plan and lead workshops, meetings, and trainings for local businesses, volunteers, neighborhood groups, community partners, and internal teams; includes public speaking and facilitating internal team meetings. Use data entry tools to track outreach activities, maintain contact lists, and manage engagement data; share progress, goals, and results through reports. Assist Coordinators with project operations, including planning, scheduling, coordinating community-facing events, and partner communications. Support the development of outreach materials, public messaging, and educational content. Respond to public inquiries and information requests in a timely and professional manner. (For bilingual positions) Engage in outreach to residents and stakeholders with limited English proficiency and assist with proofreading translations of program materials. Provide general administrative support and complete other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; or Two years of college education from an accredited college or university, and six (6) months of work experience, including internships, research positions, or other relevant experience. Desirable Qualifications
Familiarity with San Francisco neighborhoods, cultural communities, and/or community groups. Interest in applying equity, inclusion, and diversity principles. Ability to work collaboratively with teams, community organizations, and the public. Ability to stay organized while managing multiple tasks and timelines. Customer service or outreach experience with strong verbal and written communication skills. Word processing, spreadsheet, database, PowerPoint, and internet proficiency. Possession of a valid driver’s license and willingness to drive a City-issued vehicle as needed (vehicle provided). Additional Information
Exempt Employment Status: This is a three-year position contingent upon budget conditions and demonstrated competence. It is exempt from Civil Service examination and selection processes.
